And now, for something CANpletely usual, we take you back to The CANQuest (tm), joined in progress! I have really been whaling away (in the hit, thrash or beat soundly meaning of the word, NOT the highly-coveted beer definition) at the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but having just reviewed one of the last Bomber bottles produced by them & with an early CAN on-hand, it is briefly once more back into the breach before returning to the pesky Bottles!

From the CAN: "Craft Brewed in Pennsylvania"; "Odyssey Imperial India Pale Ale [IPA]"; "Since 2007 Sly Fox has brewed well over 40 varietal Pale Ales and IPAs. Odyssey is a celebration and a culmination of all that brewing. Each year, our brewers select their favorite and newly discovered hops to create a big, bold Imperial IPA."; OG 18.6 Plato, 90 IBUs."

The Crack! of the vent was like music to my ears! I could barely restrain my elation in CANducting a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I managed to CANtrol myself against all odds, though & watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with excellent retention, finally giving up in one big exhalation, leaving loads of lacing in its wake. Color was Amber to Deep-Amber/Light-Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a more pronounced bitter hoppiness than did the previous previous year's iteration from a Bottle. Here, the hops remained front & center with a PNW pine woodiness, very sharp, very bitter. I did not sense the malt(s) coming forward, nor did it seem like the hops had faded. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach, still on the light side for the style. Did I say "pine"? I should have said "oak"! It had a huge woodiness that was more like white oak than pine & the unexpected level of bitterness caused my eyes to water, albeit briefly. THIS was much more like it! As a self-described, self-avowed hophead, this is just the sort of thing that trips my trigger. Great googly moogly! Each sip was like sheer bliss as my Hops Jones faded & the usually-screeching monkey on my back settled down for a nap. I have gotten so used to him that it is like background noise, but rest assured, he is always there. Finish was gaspingly dry, causing me to have to reach for my asthma inhaler. Phew. YMMV.

Sly Fox- Odyssey

A- Light caramel orange, good carbonation, with a creamy white head. Good lacing.
S- Sweet tangy citrus fruit hops with a lighter amount of caramel buttery malt.
T- Sweet sugary caramel malt holds its own against a thick onslaught of grapefruit hops.
M- Sweet sugary maltiness bitter citrus and earthy pine hops. Solid balance.

Overall- Well balanced and creamy. If it weren't boozy it would be sessionable.

Appearance: Golden Orange with a full off white head that left some decent lacing.
Smell: Overwhelming grapefruit citrus smell. Very clean.
Taste: Hops tend to lean toward floral, slightly different than the smell. Intense, lingering bitterness, but enjoyable
Mouthfeel: oily, mild carbonation
Drinkability: very enjoyable, but due to the bitterness, one is enough. I will gladly purchase another bottle and enjoy ths IPA.
This was certainly a pleasant suprice.

A - Clear gold. Big rocky head of dense foam.

S - Malty with citrus hops. Slight toast and alcohol.

T - Not over-the-top hoppy. Strong maltiness to go with decent hops and a big bitter finish. Alcohol is also noticeable. Hop lean towards bitterness rather than big juicy flavours. Light toasted character.

M - Astringent with a moderate body and carbonation.

D - Not my favorite but decently drinkable.

A: Golden orange with not much off-white head and leaves some lacing.

S: String pine and citrus with a hint of sweetness in the background.

T: Pine and earth dominate up front then grapefruit, lemon, and floral notes. There is some maltiness but there is far more hops than malts flavor.

M: Creamy carbination, slightly oily, and very bitter, dry, and clean in the finish.

D: This is a fine east coast hop bomb. I enjoy one or two of these from time to time. I enjoyed last years more but still a nice beer.
