Black in color with rich intense maltiness. Strong in alcohol but light on bitterness. This beer is definitely a winter warmer.

A: Pours a pitch black color with a nice sized tan head, good retention
S: Smells awesome!! Maple syrup, coffee and chocolate
T: Very roasty flavor, slight maple syrup sweetness along with espresso
M: Medium to full bodied beer, velvety smooth mouthfeel.
O: Awesome porter,a little heavier bodied than a lot of porters you will see but very much full flavored and great mouthfeel. Loved it!!

Stopped by the Blacksmith Brewery after a long backpacking trip in the Nez Perce / Selway wilderness. Nothing beats a cold pint after weeklong trip! Tried several of the brewery's beers but enjoyed the Pulsaki Porter the most. Most of the Blacksmith beers are named for something local - a Pulaski is a tool used for firefighting (they actually have one hanging on the wall in the brewpub).
The porter was served in a Blacksmith Brewing pint glass. A dark dark brown brew with a dark tan creamy head. Quite a bit of lace was left on the inside of my glass the entire way down. Sure looks like a great beer!
Coffee definitely dominates the nose on this one. Very roasty with a touch of hops. There is a trace of chocolate in there as well, but it is certainly led by the roasted coffee.
I'm quite impressed with the balance of the Pulaski Porter. As indicated by the smell, there is quite a bit of coffee in here - roasty and malty. But it is pleasantly balanced with a small amount of chocolate and a slightly smoky taste. No alcohol taste in there, but a slightly hoppy finish. A medium bodied beer with a mouthfeel that could have used just a bit more thickness.
Overall, I must say I really enjoyed this beer. Blacksmith Brewing is a great place and their beers are very solid. All four, and most notably the Pulaski Porter, were extremely drinkable. I will certainly be going back the next time in the Good Land.

08/10/09- Had on tap at the brewery and took home two growlers.
Presentation- Via the tap into two growlers.
Appearance- Pretty black in color. Nice dirty brown milk chocolate colored head of about 1/2 and inch. Leaves some spots of lace behind.
Smell- Nice deep roasted aroma of malt. A touch of hops, but carried by the malt. Light notes of coffee and chocolate.
Taste- Damn, this is good. Tons of flavor with a nice medium roasted chocolate malted taste. Seems like some bittersweet chocolate is the main flavor with a touch of fresh coffee and a dash of grapefruit hops.
Mouthfeel- Smooth and lightly creamy, carbonation is about perfect, maybe a touch too much. Full of flavor in the aftertaste.
Drinkability- Probably the best American Porter I have had to date. Although, it's almost in line of being a Baltic Porter with the abv a bit higher. Tremendous beer than I hope becomes a regular on tap...even though I only get here a week out of the year, it would be nice to have this again. Quality for sure. I believe the head brewer used to be the assistant at Big Sky.
