12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours deep brown in color with a one-finger creamy off-white head that reduces to a thin film floating on top

S- plenty of smoke on the nose with notes of smoked wood, bandaids & pork. Undertones of chocolate & pork

T- Just enough smoke up front gives notes of smoked malts and smoked pork. Mid-palate brings out some sweetness with notes of caramel and chocolate. The finish closes out with more smoke, but leaves a smooth cocoa finish that compliments the smoke very well

M- medium body with medium lively carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish

O- just enough smoke that doesn't overpower and remains very drinkable, well done

Poured from a bottle into a glass.

Overall: A great smoked beer!

A dark brown with reddish hues. Clear. A creamy skim and decent lacing.
Smells very smoky. Like a meat-curing smokehouse. Some campfire or fireplace ash as well. Some underlying malt aromas.
Taste is strong of smoke, but not absurd or off putting. Wood and meat smoke. Some good porter flavors as well. The smoke is strong, but doesn't hang around as an unwanted after taste.
A nice full body. A little smooth, a little chewy.

wonderful finish for a porter. The head was small and unimpressive which lessened the ability for me really take in the aroma. The smokey aroma goes ever so well with the porter body.

Pretty tasty overall; the head is a bit small, but the aroma is nice and smoky; pretty well balanced with the smoked malts being dominant; feel is a bit thin, but appropriate; solid beer overall.

Devil's Backbone Brewing Co. "Smokehouse Porter"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BONED 17:38 08.31.16 84" and sampled on 01.25.17

Notes via stream of consciousness: Great appearance: clear, almost black very deep mahogany brown body. Frothy tan head. Very good head retention and lacing. The nose is quite smoky. You also smell the porter as well with lots of dark chocolate. The flavor is also quite caramelish. Medium caramel. And the smoke is there too. The whole thing passes across the palate nicely, and then lingers really nicely. A great sipper. Balanced bitterness lingers a bit as well. Massive smokiness. I think this might be the smokiest beer I've ever had, yet it has very little of that harshness that you find in some very smokey beers. Medium-light in body with a moderate carbonation that lends a gentle zest. Very nice lacing. Sometimes they start out well and then fade, but this one's holding up with the old lace staying and continual new lace being put out. Really nicely balanced, and I'd imagine a great porter underneath if the smoke wasn't there. Certainly worth trying.

Dark porter with a rich tan head. Leaves some lacing but not a huge amount. Smoke obvious in nose and taste at first, but seems to diminish with time. Malt is tasty and rich but could have a broader profile. Clean crisp mouthfeel given the nature of the beer.
