12oz bottle poured into a snifter
Pours a clear golden color with a one-finger foamy white head, decent retention. Mostly malt-forward aroma, hints of fruity berry-like hops with a hint of floral notes. Taste is toasted malt for the most part, hints of fruity and floral hops try to poke through, but it drinks more like a well balanced pale ale. Medium body and carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and finish. Not much going on with this one.

Devil's Backbone Brewing Co. "Single Hop IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BONED 23:04 09.01.16 84" and sampled on 01.24.17
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's interesting that the single hop used isn't listed on the label. I guess that makes it easy for them to switch it up, and they don't have to have new labels printed. So let's see. A very nice white head rises up and then holds above a hazy golden body. Fine particulate can be seen in suspension, which is usually a sign of dry hopping, and acceptable in my book. The aroma isn't that bold but the hops are clear. It's got a blend of fruits that includes some orange, some other tropical notes, and berries. Also somewhat floral. I'm tempted to guess Mosaic hops but I'm not sure, it's not quite how they usually come across. In the mouth it's medium to perhaps even medium-full in body, or at the very least dextrinous (and I now note that it's left some very nice lacing behind). It's got a standard carbonation, and it's nicely crisp. The flavor delivers sweetish, biscuity malt that's infused with the aforementioned hop fruitiness. The orange is clear, as is some berry and peach, and then it's a touch tropical towards the swallow and into the finish with some mango and papaya. It's backed by a bold bitterness that lingers heavily in the finish. What beer were those commercials and ads for where they displayed "bitter beer face"? It's weird, it balances upfront because there's a lot of sweetish malt, but then it becomes overly aggressive in the finish, almost medicinal even. As a trained (Siebel) brewer I can't even come up with a reason for it unless it was contaminated water (which I doubt) or contaminated malt (which I also doubt), or more likely residual sanitizer - in any case, it's there and it's unpleasant. That about finishes it then, huh? Did I miss anything? Mouthfeel, check. Lacing, check. I guess that's it... it starts great but finishes poorly. What a shame.

Look: a bit cloudy for an IPA
Smell/Taste: I agree with the other reviewer, the taste and smell are a bit earthy and funky. It's not undrinkable, but it is a bit strange.
Overall: It's not the worst beer I've had, but I wouldn't seek this one out again.

A: A pale orange yellow, very dusty with a lot of chunks floating about.
S: Tropical fruit, with a hint of sweet orange and pineapple.
T: Orange peel, and a touch of onion... Bitterness is earthy and a little funky.
M: Medium light in body, high carbonation, and an oily finish with a long bitter cling.
O: The hop flavor on this one is odd, but more odd than that is not knowing what the single hop is. It's not on their webpage or the beer itself. As a homebrewer I love single hop beers so I can really get to know a hop better... and not mentioning it is a major disservice especially when the name is single hop. That shit is irritating.
