Barrel Aged, Raisin and Cocoa infused Barleywine. Brown in color with a full body and loads of dark fruit flavors, this strong sipping barleywine was fermented with raisins and then was aged on cocoa nibs for a silky chocolate finish.

A draught 8oz snifter at The Brass Tap here in Baltimore on a Devil's Backbone taping night. Nice dark red-brown with a white head that quickly dwindles to a ring with good lacing. One of the best smelling ales, but I like chocolate-covered raisins. Taste isn't as good as the nose, but pleasantly chocolatey. Medium body. A solid dessert.

Had my second half-pint of this as my "shift beer" after work tonight. This review was written from my notes while I was up there. It's the chocolate version of their "Beyond All Raisins" barleywine which I tried maybe a year or two ago when I visited with a friend. From what I remember reading on the menu, it's aged on actual raisins in addition to the cocoa nibs.

Color is a nice shiny deep, dark red. Dark enough that even when held up to the light the bubbles aren't very visible, but not so dark that it appears black (there's always some visible red around the edges even in low light.) Thin layer of tan-ish foam on top at first, which nearly vanished within a minute or so.

Smells like chocolate at first, then shifting into raisin territory. Definitely pulls the "chocolate raisin" thing off, the smell is almost *exactly* like them on first sniff. There's a bit of a sweetish roasted maltiness there too. Very rich smelling beer.

Chocolate raisins are, again, the primary thing going on in the flavor of the beer. Some other sweetness is there too (I noticed a review of the non-chocolate version commenting on a "perfumy" aspect and that actually sounds just about right now that I think about it), and a lingering roasty-sweet malt after the chocolate raising flavor starts to fade.

Feel is very smooth, a bit sticky on the lips, and goes down amazingly fast for a 10% ABV beer with very little (if any) noticeable alcohol "burn." A bit of warmth in the belly, though! Despite the slight stickiness and sweet flavors, the feel does dry out on the end.

Overall, GREAT dessert beer! The half-pint seems like about the perfect serving size; I could probably go for a bit more (12 ounce bottle size perhaps?) but a full pint might be a bit much. Then again, with how drinkable this was (especially considering the ABV and richness) I'd probably find myself finishing off a pint faster than I would expect!
