Orange - Cordial Inspired Barleywine.
We’ve been waiting quite a while to bring you this citrusy copper beauty. After aging in orange cordial-flavored barrels for about a years, it was blended to perfection with a batch that has been mellowing for 6 months. This patient blend creates flavorful waves of French oak, orange cordial, fresh oranges, and hints crisp malts. We think it’s worth the wait.
Malts: Pilsner, Maris Otter, Vienna, Golden Naked Oats, Carastan
Hops: Bravo, Centennial, Cascade
IBU: 60

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass. Vintage 2019.
Deep ruby red body color, with highlights of hinted copper brown. Faint khaki forming head but a whispy creamy top on a gorgeous looking body.
Aroma pulls a light sensing amount of tea and soft caramel malt. Hints a light hop bitterness that has an almost cherry brandy warmth as well.
Palate hits real lovely. Soft bodied with a light caramel touch, and bursting hop varied presence. Warm astringency that is tolerable and dives into some fruit combinations of cherry, marmalade, sharp orange and bitter melon. Nice finishing soft toffee caramel flavors on the finish, with a good sharp pine heat.
Very well made barleywine.

Looked really nice with a thorough beige head and clear caramel color. I was impressed by the nose as it really maintained a solid caramel malty definitive Barleywine smell despite the ABV and barrel age-ness. Fun stops there as the taste is just blisteringly hot. Almost nothing is having any success fighting through the heat. In the first few seconds of each swig there is a nice caramel taste but it gets chased right away by the alcohol. Just. Too. Hot.

Devils Backbone is usually disappointing but this one surprised the hell out of me. Although labeled as being like an orange cordial, it’s really not. Lots of caramel malt notes of oak and well mellowed bourbon flavors kind of separate and melt in your mouth. One of the best barlywines in quite some time.
