Spike, 4.5% and 45 IBUs, enjoyed at the grand opening of Devil's Backbone brewpub in Wintergreen, VA.
Appearance: Served an ever-so-slightly hazy, pale-yellow bodied beer with some sparse carbonation. The head had faded by the time it arrived, and all I was left with was a ring of white lace and a slight layer of creamy fuzz.
Aroma: A surprising amount of fruit and citrus in this one, the latter obviously the result of hopping with some "C" hop, but the former strangely out of place yet nonetheless inviting and pleasant. It's all accompanied by a good dose of pale, sweet, simple malt. Nice.
Taste: A bit of a step down. The bitterness is mild, almost an afterthought, there's far less citrus than was present in the nose, and the hop notes that are present - more of a funky, grassy note - is slightly soapy in its presentation.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and medium bubbled with a medium amount of carbonation - everything's about middle of the road here, though it makes for a slightly above average feel.
Drinkability: Keep tweaking the hop schedule on this one boys. This one showed great promise in the nose, and given the low abv% could make for a very sessionable APA. I'll chalk it up to growing pains and be back in a few weeks!!
