Named Black Rock Milk Stout on the label.

A: Dark black in color with a dark tan head.

S: Rich chocolate, and sweet. Light brown sugar.

T: Sweet, rich and pretty tasty. Nice toasty flavor, as well as chocolate, some caramel, and a lovely bread flavor in the finish. Long linger on the finish... getting a touch of licorice.

M: Medium light in body, with fairly high carbonation. Some tanic cling in the finish.

O: Overall a pretty damn tasty beer. The linger is nice, but borders on abrasive.

On tap at Rustico Ballston. Served in a sampler glass. Pours a very dark brown with a light mocha head. The nose was a bit heavy on the roast, but also had some nice chocolate and a bit of sweetness. Flavor was also roasty with some milk chocolate behind. Medium body with roast bitterness. A pretty good milk stout, though a bit too roasty for my taste.

Served on nitro-draft at the new location. Glad I could finally make it out here, after missing opening day.

A: Comes out a deep brown... Pretty much black, except around the base where the golden brown hues come out.

S: Oatmeal comes out on the aroma quite nicely... A cookie dough quality to it, adding a touch of sweetness. Otherwise, roasted malts... Quite nice.

T: Mellow and pleasant roasted malts. Oatmeal could be a little more pronounced, really. The chocolate notes complement it all very nicely.

M + D: Just a little hint of carbonation and the creaminess of the nitro-pour. Aside from the obvious nitro characteristics, it seems like it could have been served on cask. I wouldn't mind a little more body, but it's good as it is, too. Nice, easy going session brew. Good call on this one.

Black Rock Oatmeal Stout, 4.5% and 20 IBUs, served on nitro-tap (even though it wasn't mentioned as such) and enjoyed at the grand opening of the Devil's Backbone brewpub in Wintergreen, VA.

Appearance: Served on nitrotap, this one pours a dark reddish brown, though it's definitely been filtered - holding it up to the light reveals as much. The head is creamy, tan, like a block of foam. As with all nitrotap beers, it's hard to gauge head retention and appearance, so I'll give it a ...

Aroma: Thin, way too thin, with nothing but a faint, wholesome toasty note and some chocolate coming through. Not particularly what I expect or hope an oatmeal stout to smell like.

Taste: Again, very thin, with nothing but bittersweet chocolate and a slight wholesome oatmeal-like note coming through. Not a lot of flavor packed into this one, which is a shame.

Mouthfeel: Again (broken record alert), this one's pretty thin, not as fluffy or solid as an oatmeal addition should have made this beer. Carbonation is low, but enough to produce somewhat of a pleasant feel.

Drinkability: The biggest disappointment of the night for me, I just wasn't very impressed with this beer. Revamp the recipe, kick it up a few notches, give it some body (definitely needs more oatmeal, and could use more of a little bit of everything), and we'll be talking then.
