Beer pours orange amber in color with a nice 1.5 finger head that fades over the first few minutes. Nice lacing left in glass. Smell is caramel and some lightly toasted malt balanced by a grapefruit/citrus hop aroma. Taste is decent; a subdued citrus/pine hop flavor meets the palate first followed by a caramel, faintly toasted taste that is somewhat bready. Mouth feel was good, carbonation was spot on.
Not at all what I was expecting from this beer. The hop aroma and taste were a letdown for me. The beer was much too malty for the style and is not balanced enough with the hops. I have had this beer at both the brewery and now a second time at a remote location, both on tap, and was underwhelmed both times. Again, not that the beer is poorly made; just not what a DIPA should be IMO.

Appearance: Pours a pleasantly-hued orange amber, very deep looking, vibrant and clear. The head leaves a lot to be desired though - though it could be the few-days old growler, there's pretty much nothing here but a thin collar of foamy lace, a wisp of surface dusting, and a few sticky blobs of glittery lace, like chicken pox all over the sides of the glass.
Aroma: Spicy pine and sweet, syrupy pineapple and grapefruit notes dominate, though a heavy amber roast, well-caramelized and doughy, isn't far behind. Neither, unfortunately, is a slight alcohol booziness.
Taste: The hops are far more faint than I'd like. Very resiny pine, fainter fruit notes, and a mild, faint bitterness. Sort of dull, muted. Malts are reminiscent of gummy bears, marshmallows, caramelized sugars. A few other faint, stray fruity notes.
Mouthfeel: A little flat, but then again, similar to the appearance, that might be due to the whole growler thing. A little thick and flat, though it does have a few flourishes of prickle carbonation.
Drinkability: Wasn't too terribly impressed by this one. It's not a bad beer, but it's a little too hot, a little too faint, a little too subdued for my taste in DIPAs. Still, it's a DIPA, and it's local, so I like it on some level. Just not the level that scores beers on this site.

On tap at DBBBC. 8.30% ABV 90 IBUS
A: Rich orange-hued body set beneath a lovely, sticky off white head of foam. The step lacing was marvelous!
S: Yeasty and a bit musty on first sniff, then opening up to big floral hopiness touch with the sweetness of coriander and pine.
T&M: Big, glorious hops supported by a sweet malt backbone. Very pronounced apricot, lemongrass, pine, and warming alcohol up front. The mouthfeel is sticky with crisp carbonation. The lingering hops and sweet stickiness plow their way all the way through the finish.
D: If it weren't written down that this is 8.30% abv, I seriously wouldn't have known until I stood up after my second one to use the restroom. Now, all that to say that this beer is ridiculously drinkable and smooth. Bravo DBBBC!
