Thanks to Deuane and SierraGS for sharing a growler of this new DIPA from Devil's Backbone on 6/11/10. According to the DBB web site, this IPA was inspired by West Coast DIPAs, especially Port's Hop 15.
A - Emerged from the growler as a slightly hazy amber/orange liquid with a finger's worth of bubbly foam that produced lots of foamy lace around the glass.
S - Initial aroma is comprised of citrusy hops with some green leafy notes, sweet caramel malt and a slight waft of alcohol. Aroma is fine, although it doesn't strike me as a West Coast DIPA nose.
T - Like the aroma, the flavor prominently displays citrus hops, but there is a hint of buttery notes that interfere a bit. Hop character evolves into a grassy bite in the middle, all the while balanced by a sweet caramel malt and toffee backbone.
M - Medium bodied with a slight syrupy texture and some oiliness from the hops. Finish is slightly dry with moderate bitterness on the palate.
D - Pretty solid IPA, although it doesn't strike me as a West Coast style DIPA. Nothing amazing, although it is well-balanced, flavorful and easy to drink.
