DB The Horror black ipa was one of the special taps when I visited the brewery last week on July 17th, 2012.
Poured at the brewery in an imperial pint glass. Nice rich dark near pitch black color with decent slightly brown head that dies to a ring, some lacing.
The aroma is nice, a big fresh hop note comes out, some simcoe and other grassy resins come through and just a touch of a roasted malt presence. It isn't a huge aroma but good.
The flavor is very nice, it has a great balance of grass/citrus hops and pleasantly dry and roasty porter like malts. Finish is bitter but not bracingly so. Some almost coffee roast like tastes up front, resins dominate the mid palate.
The feel is very carbonated, I find myself wishing it was a bit smoother and viscous than it is. I think this would do well in a cask or nitro as opposed to regular pulls with all the carbonation, the prickliness distracts from the flavor.
Overall, a surprisingly nice and satisfying beer, definitely the best one I had here today. Tasty!
