On tap at the brewpub served in a pint. Call it batch variation or possible recipe change, I don't know, but this offering was listed as 5.1%
This brew appears black in color with a thin dark tan head that rests atop the brew in a thin film. The bubbles make their way to the outer limits and collect around the edge of the glass. A swirl hardly revives a cap. When held to the light, this brew displays some brown clarity around the edges.
The smell is roasty grain, char-like with dark notes of chocolate. There is a faint sweetness to the backend of the aroma. Slight fruity hop inclusion mixes with a touch of citrus as it warms.
The taste is bitter roasted grains on the verge of tasting like liquid charcoal. There are minor notes of licorice mixed with a seemingly woodsy or burnt flavor. Very mild citrus hops keep things in check. The aftertaste for the most part is a burnt flavor.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. A fair representation of the style that is clean and without fault. Being nitpicking here, I never quite felt like I was drinking an oatmeal stout. It is lacking a bit in the typical fullness/smoothness of body and is substituted with dark roasty quality. Nonetheless, it's enjoyable.

I could drink this anywhere, anytime, with anything. in my personal opinion a stout can't get better than this. I wasn't much of a stout drinker until I encountered this wonderful work of art. its a beautiful coffee color with a nice thin tan head. the smell could possibly be better than the taste its rich and mild. the taste is great every mouthfull cold or warm. light on carbonation. pass on breakfast. get a growler to go and have this in the morning.

I had this served cold in a standard pint.
A - An opaque dark brown w/ a dark cola and garnet hue at the base with barely any light passing through. The stout has a miniscule head that clings to the glass in a wavy ring
S - A roasted aroma with toffee and slight diacetyl(butterscotch) in the nose, mild fruit notes, but the butterscotch seems to overpower the roast aroma almost
M - A modest caramel sweetness and roasted notes of barley and creamy mellow smoothness of oatmeal w/ a moderately carbonated slightly charred, astringent texture from the dark malt with a dry finish
T - A mostly coffee-like roasted flavor w/ diacetyl buttery sweet caramel flavor. The dry malt is like italian roast coffee with it's crisp subtle burnt flavor yet not smoky or chalky in any way. The yeast taste drops off in the middle with subtle vegetal notes and the lingering roasted barley flavor is basic without leaving the pint one dimensional at the end of the glass.
D - A tasty beer that I found easy to put down, but if the diacetyl was toned down and there were more oats in the feel w/ slightly less roasted dominance it could go from good to very good. I don't want to sound like I would changed everything about this stout, but it came across as mediocre for the style and served as basic refreshment. I would give this a second try, but this isn't a great example of the style in my opinion by any means.

The beer pours a dark brown/black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry oatmeal scent laid over black patent and chocolate malts. The taste is also good. It has a dry, earthy black malt flavor that goes down real easy and finishes creamy with a light oatmeal component. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This was an enjoyable OS. It was dry with just the right black malt to chocolate malt ratio.

The brew pours pitch black with no light getting through. A soft brown head foams up easily and fades to a surface layer. Aroma is rich malty with some roasted malt scents and a cheerios scent as well (oats?).
First sip reveals a very smooth beer, with thick viscous body and mild carbonation.
Flavor is mildly sweet up front with some hints of chocolate. This is followed and overwhelmed by roasted flavors that linger in my mouth long after I swallow. I also get a very faint hop bitterness on the swallow that is only present for a second.
Very tasty brew and with a lower abv, could have a few of these!
