Served on draught in 16oz. pint glass at Glen Mills location on 12/1/06.
A - Thick, murky dark brown appearance with a one finger, creamy light brown head that mostly diminished, leaving virtually no lacing around the glass.
S - Heavy malt aroma with roasted, nutty and barley overtones. Slightly yeasty, but not overbearing. Prevalent smokey aroma was also present. Little to no hop presence.
T - Initial flavor was mildly acidic with a predominantly smokey taste, more like a porter than a dopplebock. The finish was a mix of bitter and acidic, with the smokey overtones coming through the most.
M - This is a pretty full bodied beer with somewhat dry texture and soft carbonation. There was a mild to moderate alcoholic taste due to the ABV, but not as much as I was anticipating.
D - As I said, this beer drank more like a porter than a dopplebock, with a fairly complex palate. I would have liked a hop presence to balance the smokey/malty backbone, but otherwise, it was a good offering.

On tap at KSBF '06...
Appears a hazed, amber toned brown with a small, bone colored tan head that slowly fades out and leaves hearty lacing around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, smoked malt, cocoa, along with a meaty, and creamy vanilla aroma that is very nice.
Taste is of the given aromas with a gentle smoked nuttiness that caresses the caramel flavors from the brewed grain.
Mouthfeel is smooth, medium-full bodied, along with a caramel roastiness that does the brew justice.

A: The ale is a copper color with little to no head. There is an abundant amount of haze in the glass.
S: The ale has a rauch, smoked aroma that accentuates a strong malt character.
T: The smoked flavor continues into the taste, where it really controls the beer. The smokiness is chewy and bacony. The malt does come out from time to time, providing a very sweet, concentrated character but the smoke is what makes this beer tick.
M: The smoked malt is wonderfully tart and delicious, making the taste buds jump.
D: This is one hell of a beer. Described by McKenzie as a rauch doppel eisbock, there is a lot happening in this brew. The smokiness is pleasant and worth a look.
