basically this is the pinch hitter when the seasonal is kicked and the next seasonal isn't brewed yet, so the hefe was out.. bring in the bitter...
eyes...
light caramel tone, half a finger of nice fluffy head, very clingy (oddly @ the brew pub there was no head on my pint... I would have to guess suspect glassware), some carbonation noted, a touch hazy, lacing is very good and retention is also good. a nice looking presentation but nothing jaw dropping
nose...
mild caramel malts (gotta let this warm up, sheesh it is ice cold), mild hop prescence, a little biscuit, the hops definitely smell like one of the english varieties. this is a pretty basic smell for the style, pretty much as it "should" smell.
taste etc...
just short of prickly carbonation, very smooth mouthfeel, just "full" enough to not be heavy but still nice and coating with the carmel tones, a nice little kick of bitterness on the back end.. boy, this really hits the mark for an english bitter, everything is in balance, the malt and just the little bitterness like fuller's. This is not totally complex but it is damn enjoyable for being a very good represention of the style. Drinkability is high on this, velvety smooth and just an agreeable beer (especially since my first favorite beer was fuller's ESB)
verdict?
another nice solid offering from mike at a place I could practically walk to. if you are in the area uno is a must stop imo.
