This was on-tap at Pizzeria Uno on 6/21/2008. This is one of their spring time seasonal beers. They served it to me in a standard pint glass.

"Pale Bock" poured a pale straw/lemon yellow color with a white head of foam that was less than 1/2 an inch in height. This head of foam only had decent retention that left behind foamy white rings along the edge and one single solitary streak of white lace.

The aroma was citrusy and slightly yeasty with some citrus fruits, a small touch of toasted malts, and a tiny splash of yeast at the end. There wasn't much there, even for a Helles Bock.

The taste was crispy and on the light side (flavor wise) with citrus fruits, a drop of lemon zest, a smidge of citrus hops, dried and lightly tart grapefruit, and a touch of sweet yeast at the finish. The taste was average, but it would have been nice to find some malts or any kind of grains for that matter in the taste.

The mouthfeel was of course of the light side, but this one featured a slight sweet aftertaste of yeast and toasted malts. Finally the malts show up, but they decided to show up in the aftertaste. Where were they in the initial taste? 6.9% ABV? That's new to me. They didn't list the ABV% at Pizzeria Uno. If it does have that ABV%, then it completely masks it.

Average all the way with this one! That is if this beer really has that 6.9% ABV. It's worth a shot only once and not in a growler. A pint of this is good enough.

ok, mike, I am trying the bock !

eyes...
clear golden to straw hue, good size white head with nice lacing, carbonation is spot on, they serve this way too cold @ the restaurant but I let this one warm up a bit here at the ole hoemstead. What we have here is a a typical looking mai bock, nothing spectacular, nothing to detract.

nose...
very subdued, some maltiness and a hint of sweetness, the slightest hint of some euro hop as well.

taste etc...
malt and grain with a hint of sweetness, dry after finish invites a second sip, carbonation is a hair prickly in a good way, the mouthfeel is a nice medium but this is easy to drink. the after taste is of some mellow euro hops providing a touch of bite. The alcohol can be sensed but not tasted. overall a nice balanced presentation here.

verdict?
as with many of mike's beers this might not bowl you over but is a solid example of the style being brewed. for $10 this is a great buy.. it went great with some spicy food.

Pours golden (nice clarity) with a thin, creamy head that slowly descends to a thin patch. Some lacing sticks to the glass.

The aroma is very mild - some sweet grainy malt.

The taste is of sweet grainy malt with underlying floral and spicy hops that emerge more as the drink progresses. Nicely balanced. Very dry finish.

Light to medium bodied - crisp.

A tasty one to sip on!
