We are the Borg, and this is our ale. Lower your shields, raise a glass, and surrender your taste-buds. Resistance is futile...But, that's OK because this is the most advanced Black Ale in the entire Delta Quadrant. Created with Dark Munich and Black Malt, this strong Dark Ale is sure to satisfy your Bio-Chip.

650ml bottle - the latest in the 'Federation of Beers' (I know) offerings that nonsensically blend Star Trek themes and beer. Speaking of blending, this is apparently a CDA (look it up if you'd like some historical context).
This beer pours a murky, dark orange-brick brown colour, with three late-series Captain Kirk fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat fizzy tan head, which leaves some random archipelago profile lace around the glass as it quickly zaps itself outta there.
It smells of semi-sweet, bready and pastry-friendly caramel malt, brown sugar syrup, candied citrus rind, and some very weak earthy, leafy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a faint wet ashiness, some muddled sweet stone fruity notes, molasses, and a still very tame leafy, weedy, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly inert in its barely-there frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising as things warm up a tad around here. It finishes off-dry, the malt complexity pretty much running the lingering table.
Overall - yeah, just because the brewer refers to it as 'the most advanced black ale in the entire Delta Quadrant', does not qualify it as an ABA, as defined on this site. This is just way too sweet, and not particularly hoppy, to qualify it as such. I dunno, really, maybe an English Brown Ale, sans the typical nuttiness? Or maybe just a Borg Ale, not meant to actually be understood by we puny Earthlings.

Serving Type: 650 mL Bottle
L- Pours a dark, black liquid that is slightly ruby around the edges. Off-white 1 finger head with okay retention, which fades to a thin cap. No lacing to speak of.
S- Distinct aroma of Dark Munich malt and not much else. Aroma is quite muted.
T- Caramel and a very slight roasty maltiness. Again, a very light hoppiness is playing in the background to keep everything well balanced.
F- Medium-Light body and fairly light carbonation.
O- Black Ales aren't normally something that I seek out but seeing a new Garrison beer on the shelf was all the reason that I needed to pick it up and give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of the style so I didn't really have any expectations going in, but I can say that this was a fairly enjoyable beer. It's sort of a melding of caramel maltiness of lighter ales and the roasted malt flavours of darker ales. It was nice to see that Garrison opted for the malt forward profile on this beer and left the hops to play in the back. Again, i'm not a fan of Black Ales in general so I can't say that i'll be picking up another bottle of this, but it was a pretty decent brew. Give it a try and form your own opinions. Cheers!
