A:
Pours a hazy honey brown with an enormous and airily tan head that settles from three fingers to a fat ring over the course of a couple minutes. Decent retention; hardly any lacing. (4)
S:
Spicy and woodsy. Baking spices, bubblegum, cinnamon, leather, oak, smoky caramelized maple, over-ripe dark fruits. Lots going on. (4.25)
T:
Sweet and woodsy. Maple smoke, cherries, oak, biscuit dough backbone. (4)
M:
Medium bodied with good carbonation and a smooth feel; pretty sweet to be super sessionable or anything (except on cold days) but otherwise pretty enjoyable/drinkable. (3.75)
O:
Good dubbel (or BSDA?) from an awesome brewery.
This is a nice beer with a nice twist on it. It is a classic Belgian beer by all accounts, but the addition of maple syrup really kicks the sweetness and earthiness up a notch. I love dubbels (and BSDAs), but I have a limit on sweet. This is pleasingly close to the threshold, but still pretty damn sweet. If you think Westmalle (or Chimay Blue) is too sweet, you will probably not like this.
It really opens up as it warms with tons of delicious smoky maple wood smells and a round syrup-tinged flavor. Good sipper on a cold rainy afternoon.
Would have again; worth trying. (4)
