big thanks to northyorksammy for bringing this to our last tasting!
2010 vintage, aged 1 year. 16 oz (?) bottle poured into a snifter.
was a bit of a gusher when the cap was popped, still saved most of the beer. pours out a hazy/ cloudy golden color with a nice looking white head.
tons of anise in the aroma, really strong anise, black licorice, maybe a bit perfumey with a touch of herbal spice in the back.
follows the aroma with lots of anise/ black licorice. also some herbal flavors noticable and maybe a hint of yeast.
medium bodied, the slightest bit of alcohol noticable.
such a different beer, really wasnt expecting such powerful flavors. anise really isnt one of my favorite flavors, but it works pretty well in this beer, but IMO works much better in a big stout.

This deceivingly light amber colored beer was booming with licorice/anise spice in both the nose and taste. I was quite surprised when trying this beer and thought that is did a great job highlighting a spice that is generally just a complement in heavy, dark stouts (ie Abyss).
This beer definitely caught be off guard with the amount of spice it put forward, and I wonder how it would be if the spice were better balanced.
I think this beer would be worth pairing with some anise chicken feet or possibly side-by-side with the candy itself.
Thanks for letting me sample this brew northyorksammy

My bottle from the brewery, aged for a year. Great aromas, star anise and fir/piney. Anise taste, wheat in the secondary. Honey taste not prominent, but was buffering mouthfeel. One of their better ones. Varied, not heavy taste and unique. This one a gusher.
