This proved a decent beer, but not what I would have expected from a Dubbel. It was a chestnut colour with a slight reddish hue. The nose was creamy and astringent, with a hint of rhubarb. After a sweet start it became hoppy, then somewhat sweeter again with the bitterness remaining on my tongue. As I progressed through my half pint, I noticed it seeming less sweet and more biscuity, and the hops gradually seemed to have more impact.

Brewed by Lodewijk Swinkels at the Caledonian brewery for Wetherspoon Spring 2013 Real Ale Festival. Brewed in the style of a Belgian Dubbel, this has a reddish colourand predominant malt flavour, balanced by a wonderful, emerging hop character.
That is the official blurb anyway.
Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoons on 8 Apr 2013.
Nothing like any Belgian Dubbel I've ever had before. This 4.2% ABV brew was never going to set the world alight as a Dubbel, it hasn't got the legs for a start.
Looked OK, nice amber to copper hue to the clear body, on top a white crown which hung around for a while.
The aroma and taste was more like a UK Bitter in style; with its blend of malts and hops playing gently with each other without upsetting anyone or anything. Not boring but not a Dubbel.
