[review compiled from notes 1-6-2005]
I was fortunate to have this beer on cask at Empyrean's Beers Gone Wild! event; however, it is available on tap in February 2005.
This Imperial Stout pours from a beer engine and ends up with a 1/2", medium-brown head; it is very dark with just a bit of a reddish brown color when held up to the light...otherwise, it's opaque and nearly black. The aroma coming off of this beer has hints of chocolate and caramel, a bit of hop aroma, and smells slighly of alcohol. All of the smells are well-balanced, and no single one dominates.
The stout has a very rich, malty taste, moderately hoppy, with some coffee and caramel flavors noticeable as well. The alcohol in this beer is balanced VERY well for its ABV; finally, the taste is moderately hoppy. The mouthfeel is quite creamy and smooth (as should be expected for a cask beer); yet it is surprisingly light for an imperial stout.
Overall, this is the best high-alcohol beer I've experienced thus far; a Nebraska imperial stout makes it all the more enjoyable.
