On-tap at the brewpub - the normal Maakoos with cherries added.
Pours the same color as the normal Maakoos - black with a brown head - however the head dissipates quicker and leaves only light lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smells of robust roasted malts with hints of unsweetened chocolate and lighter hints of semi-tart cherries. The robust coffee and chocolate aromas that made the normal Maakoos so appealing are not present and minimally present, respectively.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth roasted malt flavors kick things off. Midway through the dark chocolate and cherry flavors enter into things, the former stronger than the latter. These flavors carry through to a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.
Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass and could have another.
Overall I liked this beer but I liked the non-modified version even better. Maybe if the cherry flavors were more robust it would overcome the loss of some of the flavors in the original version. Still, it's worth a shot.
