This was an oaked double red ale that was brewed for their 5 Gallon series.
Poured into a sniffer
Appearance: Black with reddish hues when held up to the light and an off white head that fades into a ring around the glass.
Aroma: Chocolate, coffee, licorice, and a woody aroma are the purveying smells.
Taste: There is a wood flavor that is very apparent on the finish, but up front there are flavors of chocolate, coffee and a slight fruitiness.
Mouthfeel: Low carbonation and a full body with a woody finish that is a little heavy on the tannins.
Overall: The flavors and aromas are more reminiscent of a stout then a red ale. I was also slightly disappointed in the lack of oak character. There was more woodiness in the flavor then in the aroma.
