16 fl oz can ($13.99 USD/4 pack):
Low B- / WORTHY
***
01/23/21 remarks on the last can from my 4-pack:
"Imperial India Pale Ale. with Nelson, Wakatu, & [sic] NZ Cascade Hops." 7.8% ABV.
Served cold into a dimpled mug.
Oversweet, tasting like it was brewed with lactose even though it wasn't. Hops don't bring much bitterness to balance it out, tending towards a New World mellow vibe instead of an aggressive San Diego IIPA style bitterness with soft notes of lime, mango, clover honey, and to a small extent white wine grapes. I'm not getting the floral or oily flavour I'd associate with Cascade hops, though apparently New Zealand Cascade/Taiheke is supposed to be more citrusy (which also isn't coming through).
I don't think it showcases Nelson hops to their fullest potential and I barely taste the Cascade/Taiheke at all, so I think it safe to say it's Wakatu-dominant, but that hop varietal is more suited to a pale ale or as part of a medley in an IPA in my opinion; it's not assertive enough to drive an IIPA and that's the case here. This drinks a bit weak for an IIPA, lacking adequate hop pungency and depth of hop flavour.
I don't dislike it, but I wouldn't pay $3.50/can for it again and its more mediocrity in a long line of mediocre one-offs from NoLa Brewing, which is making me rethink buying anything new from them in the future unless I'm visiting their taproom for $5 pints.
A shrug of an attempt at an IIPA from NoLa Brewing. Very pedestrian forgettable fare, but it's drinkable.

Poured from can into tulip good 2+ finger offwhite head, good retention and great lacing. Hazy golden in the glass, suspended yeast is visible (soup part I guess). Smells dank out of the gate, some hidden minerality, ripe citrus and some floral notes. Taste is sweet malt, candy like but not too much over the top, the citrus comes out as ripe, not acidic, plays well with the dank notes. The citrus carries thru to the end, and is left on the palate after the finish, which is a very mild bitterness. Some pith like bitterness left on the palate, but not overly bad.

Aftertaste breaks down a very promising first taste.
L: nothing special. Very standard.
S: very nice ipa with a more than a little sweetness
T: jumps out as a really complex ipa with good notes of everything you’d expect, and a great sweet tone that I don’t think is malt based. As long as it’s on the palette, it’s excellent. Lots of different things going on. Once it’s gone, the aftertaste is ugly bitter and astringent. Such wasted potential!
F: standard, nothing special
O: if they could figure out how to make that wonderful complex taste linger, this would easily be a 4.25 beer for me. Or maybe if it didn’t start out so well, it would rate higher.
