Enjoyed on-tap in NOLA's new (nice!) taproom. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, served in a plastic cup so I didn't get a great indication on aroma.
Appearance: Medium copper amber with a thin whitish head that fades quickly. Tough to comment on lacing with a plastic cup.
Smell: I get some rum in the smell, and the aromas I get from the standard Hopitoulas. Pine, citrus and some vanilla as well. Tough out of the plastic cup again but there is a good amount going on.
Taste: Hop forward with pine and some grapefruit up front but accented with the rum character as it warms. Nice bitterness and a bit of complexity make this enjoyable.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with crisp bitterness and a nice accent from the rum barrel.
Overall: This was a good one from NOLA and I love the experimentation. The rum came through more than I anticipated but it was good.

Purchased from NOLA's taproom. Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter.
A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch light tan head that retains well before lowering to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and broad strands of surface foam. Lacing isn't all that resilient but there are a number of small clots sticking to the glass.
S- The hops have a nice citrus-grass duality going on that's semi-musty but I don't sense much barrel presence.
T- The earthy notes take over in the taste presenting flavors reminiscent of pine and soil. Still no barrel notes but the bitterness is very assertive yet not overbearing and lingers a good while.
M- A bit oily but not that viscous overall. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.
O- Though you don't really detect much barrel in this variant, it's still a well-hopped beer that's consistently bitter without tipping the scales too much.

On tap at the Nola taproom.
Pours a nice medium orange, off-white finger of head, producing nice splotchy lacing. Aroma was citrusy, orange, hints of pine, wood, light spicy rum notes and touches of vanilla. Taste had those bright citrus notes with touches of pine, vanilla, spiced rum notes, slight oak tannins. Medium body, crisp bitterness, clean finish, didn't drink very heavy.
Overall, quit nice. The rum barrel was more accenting than other barrel aged IPAs, but that's ok, as it added a bit more complexity to an already solid IPA.
