On my first visit to The Blue House Café, they were still serving beers from among the first few batches brewed with their new, Vernonia-built brewing system. Apparently, some adjustments were needed in adapting to the new sparge arms. The result was that the beer originally intended as a porter ended up as this brown ale.
Given that this ale was an improvised fallback and not a deliberate design, I'd say Blue House made a successful recovery while working the learning curve on their new mash tun. It shows sustained suds, an airy, tapwater smell, and simple brown malt flavor with low-intensity bittering. The Brown is low-key in the English sense of austere restraint. But very appealing in that girl-next-door kind of way.
