For many people and brewers around town including brewers here at Driftwood, Mad Bruin was our first exposure to sour beer, so I was very honoured to have the opportunity to recreate this iconic beer.
It was an amazing experience which was made even more sweet by the discovery of ORIGINAL MAD BRUIN BARRELS in our cellar from 2012. They were added to the final blend and added deep complexity including fine leather, cocoa, lemons and caramel.
It was a great honour to be able to brew this beer, and I sincerely hope you like it as much as we do here at Driftwood. Cheers!

A VERY well cellared example purchased in 2013.
0.5in head, creamy off-white. Very dense. No distinguishable bubbles whatsoever.
Dull brown with hints of red around the edges. With a flashlight there is a very deep ruby heart but still dull brown soil colour.
Rich stone fruit, cherry and plum, dark sugars. Disciplined sour notes contained by light wood, leather and hores blanket.
Supprisingly fresh. Plum and cherry underlined by raisin and a nuttiness, maybe hazelnut. Deeper flavours remind me of Samual Smith Brown Ale. Belgian yeast without any over refermentation I've had from some 8-12yr in my collection.
Light spice notes, almost Christmas but less cinnamon and more sugary nutmeg (no sharp mace). The depth of sweetness and height of sour have been cut compared to fresher versions.
Lingers on the lips like a fruity balsamic reduction.
Very low viscosity but tannins and sour notes cling to every corner of the mouth, especially as time goes on.
Flavours were very bright for about 3 minutes then dulled over the next 20. But in the end it still had an over watered, under ripe plum nature with a little more wood and sharper spice.
Not nearly as initially 'good' as most aged beers ive had, or sours for that matter. Enjoyable nonetheless, and frankly more than it should be, and strangely the more is 'dies'. The evolution is akin to an aged Cantillion Kriek or a forgotten fou'foune (I didn't mean to age it I swear... Also dont) just faster and, well less everything. Bad comparison for depth but the flavours that exchange prominence, ebb and flow is wonderful, but only when in the mood to think about a beer, and think hard.
It was worth the 9.5ish years wait

This is my first time drinking a sour brown ale but i must say its all comes together very well, very fresh and aromatic perfumy nose, nice lacing on the glass. It tastes of sour dried fruit with sweet malty oak flavour to back up the sour flavour. Very rich, dynamic beer overall, i would get it again for sure, i would highly recommend trying it if your looking for something unique or different

Bottle from Fonduevoodoo in CanBIF Spring 2014.
A - Very strong carbonation coming up in a nice ruby coloured body. Cloudy body with a nice two finger beige head that lasts. Good lace walls around and a finger of retention. Nice stuff.
S - Lot's of funk, wood, dark malt, sugar, overripe dark fruit. Nice.
T - Seriously tart up front. Acidic, funky, overripe fruit again. A bit odd for the style as it doesn't pack a woody/dark fruit/cherry, but more an acidic apple note.
M - Strong carbonation, dry vinegary finish. Movement in the mouth with the medium body creates instant tingly sourness.
O/D - This is nearly on point, just missing a bit more kick. Maybe too much on the acidic end of things, smacking any of the complexity I associate with the style out the way. All that said, this is still tasty and worth a shot. Good effort.

22oz bottle, split, hair of the dog tulip
Brought back from recent trip to Vancouver - sweet label. Both of us being big fans of the "sour brown" style, this was one of the beers I sought out while in B.C. Definitely sour - minerally, vinegar, oak, tart cherry, fairly high acidity. Somewhat middle of the road in a tough style - certainly no La Folie, but still good

Thanks to Boozecamel for this one.
Poured from a 650ml. bottle, no freshness info.
Appearance: Huge head, great retention that slowly pops and fizzles while leaving some traces on the glass. Body is the color of dirty brown.
Smell: Sour cork, bit of vinegar, bit shy i found.
Taste: Sour tartness that slowly unfolds itself, bit of minerals, black cherries, light vinegar with loads of wine cork flavor.
Mouthfeel: Very prickly, lively, acidic, full and long feel.
Overall: A discreet Oud Bruin, tasty indeed.
