I had to re-review this beer because the second day I tried it- with a lighter head and all- it seemed much, much better.
This is in fact a very special lager that has a maerzen-ey character. Produced for the 2005 oktoberfest (26 thru 28 october).
The appearance straight ahead seems a bit treacherous- all in all not in a bad way- because once served it appears a bit more amber than it actually is. when placed again proper lighting, it is rather pale straw on the brink of becoming an amber. the head is rather abundant, flashy white with a great retention (for a lager). It is much more amber than straw though.
The smell was quite hoppy (I was told they used the same hops as the Roja) but was more balanced than the other, because a grainy smell surfaced halfway through- weak, nonetheless- but still present.
Taste-wise, the beer was good. It is softly blended between a considerable grainy/wheaty feel and the strenght of the hops afterward that make it lean towards a drier end. The lager character was noticeable- it was, in contrast, more pleasant in a colder environment. The sweetness at first was also more present the second time I tried it, making it a maltier combination that seemed appropriate for the style. brilliant.
The lager style reflected strongly in the mouthfeel. rather than a tad oily character the BBC ales draw, this had a watery (not in a bad sense) feel, perceivable in the cold freshness and between the hints of grain and malt, and the strong presence of the hops.
The beer isn't too strong, which makes it perfectly appropriate for the oktoberfest sessions.
In the end a very nice brew, I mussay not fantastic but fits right up there with the more popular BBC styles, and is a comfortable, and palate-able beer- and an introduction to the o-fest for colombia.
