This had a soapy finger of light-tan head upon presentation. Color was a deep, dark-brown with ruby highlights. Nose was fairly roasty but underlain by a mild hoppiness. My mouth began to water! Mouthfeel was slightly thin, but it was a minor thing compared to the welcome interplay between the roasty maltiness and the hoppy bitterness on the tongue. Finish was more bitter than roasty, which was A-OK by this self-avowed hophead. It was a mellow vibe that lingered with a smoky bitterness. I could make this [drinking cask ale] a habit ...

Thanks to the Imbiber for this one served on cask.
A: The Black IPA is just that, a dark brown color that offers a few scattered ruby highlights. A thin head, thanks to the cask, lies complacently.
S: The nose is malty, roasted and dark. Hoppiness, which I expected to be stronger, is far more relaxed. In fact, the aroma is nearly indistinguishable from a stout.
T: The taste doesn't deviate significantly. Burnt flavors, roasted and toasted dominate. Hops follow but they aren't the punch in the face that you'd expect from a black IPA. this one stresses balance and order over the normal chaos. Another first for me, my first Pearl Street, and I'm pleased but not sated.
M: The mouthfeel stresses roasted stout flavors at the expense of a far-hoppier bitterness.
D: Good but not what I'd expect. Possibly it is the cask that has stripped the bitterness from the ale.

Lovely black ipa served in a pint glass with a frothy 1/4 inch head. It is a surprisingly dark beer. Very little light is escaping through. It smells of very roasty malt notes. It is quite a delightful beer. It starts off with a big roasted malty start and then a slow wave of smokey hops comes in.
I've had various black ipas and found them far too bitter. I find them not very drinkable. This is a nicely balanced beer and is not tiresome to drink. I suppose it could be a little bitter for good measure. But that could be after effect of having the hoppy lake effect first. Overall a pretty drinkable beer.

Presented with a black brew with hints of ruby in the light.
light hops in the aroma
Tastes is hop forward then burnt malts finishing harsh in the vein of burnt toast
The only good thing about it so far is that its got a chewy body
Won't be having this again
