Aromatic, sophisticated, impressive. It was very cold, which may hold flavors and aromas, but it was very good. Ah, if I could, and my money this...

This brew won gold at the 2014 World Beer Cup, beating out 34 other entries -- most of which were FROM BELGIUM. It's brewed with raisins and named for the neighborhood in which Cervejaria Wals is located, which is itself named for St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment (AKA hippie) and founder the Franciscan Order. This was the first recipe ever brewed within Wals’ walls.
A fairly clear, coppery hue – caramelized sugar simmering in the pan. Very little head is created by the pour, and what’s there dissipates within seconds.
Bubblegum, strawberry, brandy, raisins, brown sugar, Honey Smacks. Sweet, smooth and intoxicating. It’ll take a while to get past the aroma and bring yourself to drink it.
The front is subdued – a mild blend of toasted malt and caramel with a splash of maple. The swallow delivers a bit of raisin, ginger, cinnamon and more breadiness through the finish.
Very heavy for the style, a creamy medium-full. Mild, peppery carbonation and very little fizz.
Carried into gold on the nose alone.

375ml corked bottle served in a weizen glass.
A: Pours a dark amber almost brown color forming a small beige and very bubbled head. Small retention and only few lacings left in the glass
S: Very fruity. Strong notes of grapes. Caramel, caramel malts. Wood. A bit sour
T: Pretty much as the nose. Strong notes of grapes, toffee, caramel malts, oak. Slightly sweet upfront. A bit sour finished by a nice and smooth hoppy bitter end
M: Medium body. Low carbonation. Fruity, malty and bit sour aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. Great beer. I'm becoming a fan of Wals ;)

I´ve been impressed with Wäls thus far, so let´s finish the work. From a 360 ml corked and caged bottle at Melograno, on to the beer:
The head formed on top of this chocolate brown colored beer is big, puffy, long lasting, and sticks to the glass, just as you´d see in pictures. Its nose is aromic and lovely, filled with a red grape bite, the comes in plum and chocolate.
The flavors department is no slouch at all. It´s tasty, strong dark malt flavor, dark fruit from the yeast presence, a little fig, it´s tasting good. The alcohol is inserted well, though it does warm you up.
Very Belgian in character like the other Wäls ales. A well worthy dubbel.
