Reviewed from notes taken Summer 2015.
5.50% ABV.
33cl bottle served into a pilsner glass @ Kaisla in Helsinki.
HEAD: Half a finger in height. Gorgeous khaki colour with a fantastic shining complexion. Leaves light lacing on the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is average - ~2 minutes.
BODY: Opaque black. No yeast or sediment is visible within.
A nice looking black pils, if one is willing to go along with that stated style.
AROMA: Faint roast, hints of coffee, caramelized dark malts, amber malts, and pleasant floral hops. Hints of dark bread. An arresting fragrance in a purported pilsner, but a pleasant one.
Aromatic intensity is average. I'm excited to try it.
TASTE: Hints of roast and coffee accentuate the dark/schwarz malt foundation, with lighter/paler pilsner malts lending it a refreshing taste. Balanced albeit simple. Boasts above average depth of flavour. The uniqueness of the "dark beer" flavours in this pilsner is hard to ignore - and, surprisingly, it isn't a gimmick and actually works. I quite like this.
MOUTHFEEL: Smooth, wet, refreshing, light-bodied, well-carbonated. Complements the taste nicely.
Not syrupy, oily, gushed, hot, astringent, harsh or scratchy.
There isn't quite a harmony of texture and taste, but this mouthfeel suits the flavours pretty well in a general sense.
OVERALL: Highly drinkable in spite of its dark leanings. This fresh subversive take on the pilsner style may make traditionalists squeamish, but it's well worth trying and may well be one of Finland's best beers. I'd absolutely get it again and would highly recommend it to those visiting Finland.
