Served on-draught at Malja in Kuopio into a pilsner glass. I believe this is an exclusive brewed just for Malja. Cost was 7 euro. Reviewed from notes. Expectations were above average.
HEAD: White and thin. Average (~3-4 minute) retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Seems a bit weak and watery. Not frothy or creamy.
BODY: Clear translucent copper of good vibrance. Clean, with no visible yeast particulate or hop sediment. Good clarity.
It's a nice looking albeit conventional IPA appearance. Not unique or special within its style, but generally appealing.
AROMA: Fresh floral hop aroma with juicy notes of citrus, flowers, and grass. The citra and amarillo aren't showcased vividly or deeply, but it's a nice hop profile for a Finnish IPA overall. Pale and caramalts lend this beer its backbone. No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: A nice pairing of pale malts, caramalts, and hops, with notes of grass, vague citrus, and most of all floral hops coming through nicely. Well-balanced, if a bit simple and plain for an IPA. Nicely built, but lacking in terms of subtlety and nuance. Drawbacks include an odd buttery taste and a graham cracker-like malt note. Somewhat shallow.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, refreshing, aptly medium-bodied, and overcarbonated. Complements the taste decently, but there's not a harmony of texture and taste here and this mouthfeel fails to elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Definitely drinkable. I love that it's not too bitter like many American examples of the style, but it needs to commit to fuller, deeper hop notes. More an English IPA than an American IPA, with a prominent malt backbone that detracts from the hop emphasis. I'd get it again, but ideally not at 7 euros a pint.
