this was a fall seasonal last year according to the (awesomely decorated) can, and as such, i probably should have consumed it awhile ago instead of letting it get lost in the shuffle and languishing around the cellar or fridge or whatever, but i have to say, its great beer and its held up really well. i guess i didnt realize it was an ipa base, or i would have cracked it sooner. cool light brown to brick red color, a little chill haze and a tiny bit of sediment that probably wasnt there when this was released. it has a billowing khaki head on it, really airy and lasting, almost looks belgian in the glass. aroma is coffee and its still strong and fresh, when i crack the can, it fills the room with good fresh ground coffee. the hops are well behind it in the smell, likely faded at least a little bit. the flavor is great though and both elements together are awesome. i havent loved coffee ipa types, but i think the red malt and the fuller body and greater depth it brings are a necessary bridge between the hops and the coffee, and this ends up far better than most because of that. slight smoke and dry wood to it, a little toasted bread and chocolate, and then a bright flash of piney bitter hops to finish, lingering on the tongue after the swallow. good carbonation too, this has the right weight to it for the flavor. impressive beer even now. these guys are underappreciated in this market.
