Poured into a Teku

Look: Reminiscent of a sarsaparilla. Some lacing that quickly dissipates when swirled around. Pretty beer.

Smell: Vanilla, sweet malt, faint smokiness, dates, faint bourbon, and a sweet fruit note verging on cherry.

Taste: Up front, a blast of vanilla mixed with a bourbon note. However the bourbon note seems to be overtaken by the vanilla bean presence. In other bourbon aged porters I've had, the vanilla note is usually from the barrel, however this note seems to be from the vanilla bean adjuncts. It's interesting, though I was hoping a bit little more bourbon character. The smoke is faint but nice. I think some smoked beers overdo it, but the smoke in this brew is like a ringmaster's whip keeping all of these flavors in subtle line.

Feel: Velvety with a Medium-Medium+ mouth feel.

a little part of me was hoping they would overdo this with smoke, and make the adjuncts in them (we had both editions side by side) less assertive, or subservient even to the smoke, i dont think people like smoked beer very much in the craft world, but its a style i love, and so i wished here for more of it in both of the porters. that said, the base beer is well sturdy, fully roasty and bitter, lots of espresso bean and dark chocolate covered something notes, so its all good there, lots of body, rich but not sweet. the vanilla adds the sweetness here, and i think the vanilla in this one, at least on draft, is more flavorful and omnipresent than the cocoa is in that edition. authentic bean flavor, and the beer isnt too intense to appreciate that fact. smooth and long in the finish, more chocolate, almost a melted ice cream component with all the vanilla. i hoped for more smoke, but its subtlety here lets the beer be earthy and nuanced, and the grain is amazing here overall. joseph james seems to be getting no love from the nerds, at least here in colorado, but they are truly putting out some spectacular beers right now, and this series is a fairly priced and delicious treat!

Nice dark appearance. Very pleasant vanilla aroma with a hint of bourbon. Slight head and carbonation. Taste is bourbon with a fairly strong vanilla flavor without any alcohol aftertaste.
