you either really like this kind of thing or you dont, and i surely do! its a briefly bourbon barrel aged strong english mild, with a lot of malt flavor to it but a general lightness compared to its alcohol strength, enhanced slightly by the wood and whiskey, but its not way too much, and this is a dangerously easy drinking strong ale. notes of toffee and baked dessert, pie crusty, with a rich malt complexion and a nice subtle vanilla note along with the oak, which has a vanilla element to it as well, and the beer is honey and brown sugar sweet, but it makes sense for what it is. what keeps it in check, and layered, and balanced for me, is the english yeast complexion, which is bready and mild too, but distinct in here, and it serves to mellow this out i think, ferment it drier than it would otherwise be, and add a needed basic flavor to this, old school and right on. i think these guys get very little credit compared to what they deserve, at least in the colorado market, where quality is expected and there is a huge flood of great beers in every style, their stuff just seems to be lost on the beer nerds here, but this is certainly as good as anything the locals are doing, it just maybe doesnt quite do enough to push itself off the shelves into peoples hands, i dont know, maybe nobody drinks english styles anymore, even loosely english like this one, its not really fair, but more for me i guess. this is splendid on overall quality and tastes rather unique, even in a style you think you know what to expect. really enjoyed this one, and drank it way too fast! color me among the joseph james fans at this point!
