Look: The Joseph James Russian Imperial Stout pours an intense shade of cavernous black, it could easily be mistaken as the same shade as the color of my ex girlfriends heart. Even when held to a direct light source The Joseph James Russian Imperial Stout still looks almost pitch black but with an intense enough light there are the slightest shades of mahogany around the edges of the glass. A bountiful russet head sits nicely atop this fine stout; it looks something akin to a fresh loaf of rye bread. There isn’t much carbonation with this stout but that isn’t unusual. There is also a ton of thick and creamy lacing creeping down the side of my glass.
Smell: The nose of The Joseph James Russian Imperial Stout starts out with an intense chocolate and roasted coffee aroma; there is a slight trace of vanilla. I can barely detect any alcohol in this stout from the nose.
Taste: Big hits of coffee assault my taste buds on the first pull followed up by warm dark chocolate and a good helping of roasted malts. There is the slightest hint of oak aging that I am sure will be more pronounced if this stout was able to age. The finish is wet yet smooth. I get the faintest trace of alcohol on the back of my tongue about 5-7 seconds after each taste. This is a very rich beverage and there is no doubting that.
Feel: Thick and creamy almost like Skim Chocolate Milk. There is very little carbonation. This stout has a great mouth feel.
Drinkability: To date this is my favorite beer from the guys at Joseph James. This isn’t a beer for little bitches plain and simple. It’s a beer for beer drinkers. Big tastes with a tremendous amount of alcohol. If you are ready to elevate your beer drinking game, I suggest you step up to the plate and try The Joseph James Russian Imperial Stout on for size. You will not regret it.

Poured from a bomber into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass...
A - Pours black with a creamy brown 2 finger head that slowly fades leaving a spotty lacing.
S - Carmel, licorice and a little dark chocolates notes hit the nose.
T - Roasty dark chocolate all the way. The taste stays on the pallete for a little bit. Slightly warming on the way down, but not boozy.
M - Heavy mouthfeel, just how I like my stouts to be. Perfect carbonation.
O - This is a very good example of a very simple Russian Imperial Stout. No coffee, no bourbon barrel aging, no bells and whistles. Just a good stout. Smooth, roasty, and warming. A perfect winter beer.
