On tap in a weizen glass.

Pours a somewhat hazy caramel amber color with a fluffy 2-finger head. The retention is a bit disappointing, but it leaves plentiful sticky lace.

No banana presence, but there's plentiful clove and a big peppery spiciness. Huge wheat tanginess, almost to the point of being overpowering. It asserts itself mid-swallow and lingers for several seconds after, along with a slight medicinal flavor and a bit of booziness (although the ABV is pretty modest). Would like to see a touch more sweetness- the missing banana character would help out tremendously.

Definitely a beer with potential, although maybe with a couple of kinks to work out.

The Weiss surprises me for its juxtaposition of German name and Belgian profile. The taste is really more wit than weiss. The matter is further complicated by a taphandle reading "weiss" and a website calling it hefeweizen. Though the two are synonyms, let's stick to just one at a time.

Weiss is topaz colored and delivers an engaging array of proactive spice in both the nose and the taste - plenty of peppercorn and coriander. These are likely the result of a generous array of phenols, but the effect is as if some real measure of spice adjuncts were directly incorporated into the recipe. The drier wheat elements are subsumed.

I drank a pint of this wheat beer at Shangri La on Clinton Street, the former home of Clinton Street Brewing. It seemed appropriate since the brewer at CBP began brewing at Clinton Street and still services the Shangri La account with his beers. The Weissbier looked naked with its complete absence of lather and finished on a stray note of pencil shaving. It otherwise showed worthy character and is very serviceable.
