First had: on tap at the Blacksburg brewpub
Dark cola color with a small cap of dense tan head; moderate retention and a bit of lacing. Basic dry stout aroma, roasty dark malts, notes of coffee and spent grains. More of the same in the taste, dark malts, coffee, dry and roasty, very little sweetness, if any, fairly grainy. Medium body, and drinkable. A typical albeit lack-luster example of the style.

From notes on 11/08/12:
Had on-tap; Poured in a Bull&Bones pint glass.
A - Came with a thin layer of very light tan creamy head with decent retention; Very dark brown in color; Good showing of lacing around the glass
S - A little disappointed here as there isn't much I can detect - some roasted barley for sure, and perhaps some underlying chocolate
T - Taste makes up for the nose; Lots of roasted flavor here - both barley and coffee bean character; Just a bit of dark chocolate bitterness is present; Unlike many Irish Dry Stouts, the flavor here isn't held back or subdued in any way
M - Light to medium bodied; Carbonation is just below moderate, but above the norm for the style; Finishes dry
O - Overall, this stout is probably my favorite beer of all the offerings I've tried from Bull & Bones. It's a pretty solid representation of the style, though I'd be curious as to how this might improve with a bit less carbonation and utilizing a nitro-tap. I would definitely order this again in future visits to the restaurant.

A dark molasses, root beer color with a modest oatmeal brown fuzzy head and very full lacing. The aroma is medium chocolate charcoal, not too strong or definitive. The flavor hits with the proper expression of the aroma with charcoal first and a quick follow up of dark chocolate bitter hop. It's a bit thin, stiffly carbonated but it provides a nice charcoal taste with fair bitterness. Medium drinkability, a ittle harsh, but that is what's interesting here. It grows on you and improves as it warms with a hint of coffee but it does have a certain mineral quality that brings it down a touch. Overall, not bad, definitely worth a try.

Tried this as part of the Bulls & Bones Beer sampler....
3 oz sample
A: Dark Dark Brown.... nice head and lacing
S: Coffee and Malt
T: Lots for Coffee flavors with sweet malt....
M: Med to heavy... more on the Med side... note a thick and creamy as I was hoping
D: I think the coffee part was a bit over powering for me... over all not a bad brew.. very Irish
