On-tap at Fountainhead. Not sure if this is the same as the barrel-aged version from FoBAB or merely the base beer, but if it's the former I didn't get a ton of spirit character. Served in a tulip.
A - White foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and splotches of lacing. Hazed brown-orange body.
S - The chile pepper character is pretty huge, with vegetal and spicy notes dominating. There's a mildly bready backdrop but this is very much about the mixture of earthy, spicy, and grassy pepper flavors. There is perhaps a bit of oak in the periphery that getsovershadowed by the earthiness.
T - Taste is a bit more green and vegetal rather than spice, with a bitter and perhaps slightly oaky finish. The malt base shows up stronger, with toasted grains, lightly sweet malts, and mild fruity notes. Didn't really enjoy the mixture of flavors here as much as the aroma.
M - Chewy medium body with active moderate carbonation. There's a bit of warmth, but not as much as I was expecting. It sounds like the Double refers to the base recipe and not the chile addition. Surprisingly sticky finish.
D - This didn't really translate from the smaller Chiptole Dynamo, and whatever barrel influence there may have been was largely peripheral relative to the earthy and vegetal pepper flavors. I managed to to get through my 10oz or so, but it's not something I'd order again.
