I rode the train out to Pilisvörösvár to visit Rotburger a couple weeks back while I was traveling in Budapest. It’s like a little slice of Bavaria right there in Hungary! Very old-world pub feel inside, tons of wood, dozens of Bayern Munich scarves hung from the ceiling, old beer bottles, checked tablecloths, and the like. Plus, you can look through windows in the pub and see the brewhouse, a little touch that I always appreciate.
On my visit, they had 7 beers on tap (normally they have 8, but they were out of their schwarzbier), basically all German styles: helles, kellerbier, an elderberry lager, cherry brown ale, hefeweizen, and an Oktoberfest. The kellerbier was great and the Oktoberfest was solid too; I took a couple bottles for takeaway and those beers were up to the standard as well. Rotburger is definitely making some of the best lagers I’ve had in Hungary.
They are also a restaurant, and have a menu with all kinds of German classics. I had bratwurst with sweet mustard and a heap of saurkraut with a pretzel on the side, and it was outstanding. All of my interaction here was in Hungarian, and there was no English menu that I saw, but service was friendly if a bit … disorganized? I think it’s a family business and sometimes you can’t tell patron from worker. But it was definitely homey!
