Good pizza for the south. Specially white pizza is where it's at. Beer selection not bad at times. Stumbled on some hopslam last yr so they have some heady brew every now and then

Other than Closed for Business, this downtown Mellow Mushroom has one of the largest draft selections in Charleston. And they are constantly rotating which beers they have on-tap. They also have a huge selection of bottled beers. They also have a 100 beer club (free to join) where you get a free shirt and mug once you drink 100 different beers. I think this is pretty neat because it gives you a goal and lets you branch out with your selection.

The upstairs bar is nice and there are lots of tables to sit at upstairs. There is also a really nice outdoor deck with a cool mural that they light up with a black light when it gets dark.

The food in generally really good. The hummus and the Kosmic Karma pizza are my two favorites. The food can be a little pricey but it doesn't usually disappoint.

Overall, I go here for the awesome beer selection, but the food is really good and it's a cool place to hang out with friends.

Went there tonight for some dinner and some beer. I was very pleasantly suprised by the beer selection they had. They had around 10 different items on tap, and some decent selections of things that I had not tried. They had a respectable amount of bottled beer as well.

Food is great as usual. The pizzas here are really good and you can get some different things.

Service was a little slow, but it was good. They took care of us, but they were busy.

Atmosphere was good, but it was crowded. Its not really fair for me to ding them as a Virginia Tech meeting place, but that did take away a little bit as people were jumping line to go upstairs for the gathering up there.

Overall a nice place to stop by.

This location seems to have been toned down quite a bit as compared to other MMs to fit into the Charleston atmosphere. But they have the same commitment to good pizza and craft beer. I especially like the second floor with its exposed brick walls, molded tin ceiling and worn wood floors.

They had 16 on tap including Coast IPA which I took advantage of. The only real down side for me was the use of chilled glasses. The staff was helpful and the pizza was pretty solid.

Another reliable MM location.

I've been going to the Shroom since I moved to Charleston back in 2002. I used to frequent the place when I lived downtown, often going there after class, to watch games, and to work on the 100 beer club. Needless to say, the atmosphere of the bar hasn't changed... although they have expanded the seating area, put in a few more TV's and added a rooftop patio out back. Service at the bar has always been stellar, in my opinion - the current bartender (the guy who's there the most, at least) stays familiar with their draft offerings and can always make a good suggestion. As for table service, its probably hit or miss - there's a good chance you'll wind up with a college kid who knows very little about beer, with a chance that service will be a little slow. They have 15-20 taps, plus a slew of bottles, so selection is exceptional here. Last time I was there, they had Stone Smoked Porter, Prima Pils, Hennepin, and a couple of Coast offerings on draft - just to name a few. Food is great - superb pizzas and calzones, and a good assortment of sandwiches, salads, as well as some basic bar fare. I try to stop by for happy hour every once in a while - which is great by the way... half off all pints! You can't beat that.

I gave this place a shot after checking out the MM in Spartanburg. I stopped in on Monday night and the downstairs was basically empty, all the action was upstairs. I grabbed on of the few seats available at the bar.

The beer selection was very good, and seems to be the case at MM. I had a few Coast offerings and a Young Chocolate Stout on draft as well. For grub I scarfed down a hot sausage sandwich, it was delicious!

They have a patio available for the smoking crowd, weather permitting of course.

A great beer stop, the food is good to. You are in Charleston, and there are countless other options, but I will stop back here next time I am in town.

Had dinner at MM on 1/15. Downstairs was packed but we were able to find a couple seats upstairs at the bar. This was my first time at this particular MM as I have been to a couple other locations. Overall, this one was tops for me. Food was good as always, and they had a very impressive bottle selection centering mostly on American micros with a smaller selction of Belgiums,Germans, and other imports. Looked like at least 15 handles for drafts. I ordederd pints of Coast Brown Rye, Bells Two Hearted Ale, and Coast Hop Art. All beers came in chilled pint glasses (not frozen Glasses).
Service was great and the bartender was very personable. We talked about our dissapointment of Founders leaving South Carolina. For dinner I ordered the Steak and Cheese Calzone. Food was very filling and came out hot and fresh. With it being friday night in Charleston, the attractive co-eds were out and about. Glad I was here with a friend and not the wife, or I'd be in trouble for checking out the scenery.

How can you miss at M.M.? A wide glass front opened onto the m.d.s. to the immediate right with round restaurant tables and chairs in each of the bowed-out windows. Booths lined both exposed back walls with some trippy paintings on the right wall and a Lite-Brite construct and a snaking mural in the overhead on the left wall. The exposed, equally snaking kitchen ran down the back of the left wall with the stairwell up to the second floor across from the kitchen on the right side. Vintage-looking tables and chairs lined the centerline. Upstairs at the top of the stairs was a Mushroom and a bas-relief rendition of mushrooms and palmettos. Continuing aft, there were two bas-reliefs: one of a surfing mushroom and another of tqll sailing ships. A series of windows all of the way forward overlooked King Street. The draw? The aluminum-topped bar on the right side wall and 7 taps and a two-doored cooler chock full of good beer. "Brewland" was their bas-relief version of Candyland above their aquarium. Wildly mellow!

I really dug watching them hand throw the dough. Their pizzas are bangin', yo! A small is plenty for one; a medium for two; and the large must be as big as the National Debt. We split the Caesar!, Caesar! pizza which came with a Caesar salad as part of its topping. No kidding. Mellow out.

A: Mellow Mushroom has an upstairs bar that's pretty cool - cool for what is essentially a chain restaurant.

Q: There's a high quality of beers here, with quite a few good breweries being represented.

S: The bartender working the night I was there was knowledgable and friendly.

S: A wide variety of beers: COAST, Rogue, New Holland, Magic Hat, Allagash and the ubiquitous Guiness on tap. Tons of beer in bottles: Bear Republic, St. Bernardus, Weihenstephaner, Bell's, Highland and Victory to name a few.

F: Solid, well made pizza. That's all I've ever had from Mellow Mushroom.

V: Beers here are pretty pricey, though it's to be expected in that neighborhood. A Rogue and a COAST cost me $10.95. This is really one of the only complaints about Mellow Mushroom.

Can't miss this 2-story Shroom in the middle of busy King St in Charleston. We sat upstairs, which had a nice long bar and tables throughout.

Dozen or so taps, including COAST HopArt, Racer 5, Foothills People's Porter, New Holland The Poet, Sweetwater 420, Stella, Sam Adams Summer. Didn't really look at the bottle selection, nor was there a beer menu on the bar.

Spicoli the Bartender was quick and courteous. Word to the wise- Ask for a room temp pint glass as most of their stock is stored in the beer coolers.

As typical with Mellow Mushrooms, the food is outstanding. Had a few HopArt and Racer 5, which complemented the house special pizza like a charm.

This was actually one of the better bars we visited in Charleston. The upstairs bar is actually pretty cooler. It looks like it may be the the top end as far as Mellow Mushroom goes, and they had incredible music playing the night we visited. Seriously, how often are you going to hear Iron and Wine played in a bar? The beer selection was a little better than what was on tap at Charleston Beer Works, but would easily be surpassed in a larger city. Sadly I missed being able to get a pint of Coast Brewing's Black Beerd Imperial Stout by a single day here.

My only complaint is that they put the very cool and well-stocked bar on the top floor. Seriously, how are they going to expect drunk people to make it down that spiral staircase without falling to serious injury. Luckily, I stopped after a Victory Storm King and an Atlanta Brewing Bogart.

As for food, I really like Mellow Mushroom's pizza and pretzels. They've got some of the best crust (texture and taste) of any chain pizza place I've ever been.

Stop number five on our tour was for dinner here and to watch the Sox win the ALDS (which they did this night). Downstairs is more restaurant like, so I sat upstairs at the bar where there are a few tvs. The place has a cool restaurant/hippie vibe to it, which gave it a fun, young atmosphere. The bartender here was top notch. A young guy, very friendly. Went out of his way to make sure that a tv with the Sox game on was facing my end of the bar. Was also very helpful with aiding me in my search to drink local beers. His recommendations of three different Highland (NC) beers and one from New Holland (MI) were excellent. This place had the best selection in the city, in my opinion. Lots of great craft taps, and a great selection of bottles beers. Plus, the pizza here kicked butt. I recommend the house pizza, which had a crazy amount of toppings on it. Prices I thought were very good here considering the high quality of the product and service. We had a small pizza, and 5-6 beers, and it was about $45 before tip. Not bad. This was my favorite place in Charleston. And the Sox beat the Angels. A good night was had by all.

Went here as part of my beer foray into Charleston.

Atmosphere is good. The upstairs bar is a good size with a lot of TV's to keep me entertained. Not quite a sports bar, but pretty close. I saw a lot of families eating there.

Quality is good. Every pint glass I was served with was a Sweetwater 420 and you have to ask specifically for unchilled glasses, but nothing too terrible. I did notice they did have different glassware for Belgians.

Service was very good. I never had to wait long for a beer, and the staff actually knew a good bit about what they were serving.

Selection is the best I saw in Charleston. They had about 12 beers on-tap, including one COAST, three Rogue, a couple New Holland, and a few other microbreweries that I can't recall. Their bottle selection was also solid. I went there for Bear Republic, Palmetto and New Holland and they had plenty of that for me. They also had a lot of Georgia and North Carolina micros as well - I'd probably say there were about 100 bottle selections total.

Food was good, I got a steak 'n cheese as a snack to hold me over until dinner. Of course their pizza is the way to go.

I agree with some previous posters in that it's a little more expensive than the norm, but it's worth paying the extra dollar to get the selection available there.

Definitely stop by here if you're in Charleston and looking for local beer, or any good beer for that matter.

Nice chill atmosphere on the second floor of a pizza chain, its generally not terribly crowded but I'm a cook and am never there on a fri/sat night. Long bar with lots of lcd tv's and what not definitely a cool looking place in my book and not too pretentious.

The quality of the food is pretty good, ive only ordered food once and they definitely make good pizza dough.

Beer selection is about as good as charleston gets, they definitely have the best draft selection in charleston. 3 rotating Rogue taps with a lot of limited edition stuff floating through which is the highlight in my opinion. They also have 2 or 3 coast taps which is also a big plus. WHen I was there last they had avery's ipa and stout so they keep up with the time too which is cool. Bottle selection is not bad, a lot of sold selections. Abt 12, old rasputin, terrapin, lots of carolina and georgia stuff going on which is cool.

Prices are kinda steep in my opinion, a pint will run you like 4-6 bucks and an old rasputin set me back 6 so I definitely wouldn't call it cheap but that location is definitely not cheap either so its to be expected. IF you like draft beer, as of right now the MM is the place to go in Charleston check it out.

Stopped in here for a bite to eat on my way through town. I always try to make it a point to stop in at a friendly place and this was about as friendly as you can get. Nice two story place with the Pizza part downstairs, since the family was with me this is where we ended up. Huge selection of bottles rivaled anything I have seen in SC, I mean just a huge number. Must have been around 20 taps and all were pretty much quality. No BMC to be seen. Some nice Rogues and lots of locals. Food was excellent and the service was fast and efficient. Very cool atmosphere and a nice place to bring the family. Traffic getting there is a bit rough, but the trip was worth it. I will definitely be stopping back in here again.

Met up with a fellow Charleston for pizza, draft and beer trade. Figured this way I can give Mellow Mushroom the 30 dollars instead of giving it to Fedex as a trade.
The only downside to this place is the fact that it is downtown in the tourist area. A charlestonian tolerates tourists like a cat tolerates water. However, it was worth the trip.
This is a two level college type bar. The top floor is a bar, but the bottomw floor is a pizzaria where all the bar selections are available. The beer selection is great for anywhere, but since it has little competition, OUTSTANDING for Charleston. The bar menu listed over 200 bottled beers and the draft selection is exotic and fresh. Tonight they were offering Rogue JLS Glen Ale, Terrapin India Brown, Rogue Imperial and too many others to mention. The service was great considering how busy they were and the food is good and affordable.
This will be a standard haunt of mine, especially when it gets colder and the tourist are less dense. All around a great draft bar.

Went there after a tour of the city with my wife. Drank at the bar, which is on the 2nd floor (pizza restaurant on the first).

Was hoping to see some big beers since the law changed, but although the selection is large, I found myself not being impressed by much they had. I love big IPA's, and they have none. When I asked the bartender what their best IPA was, she pulled out a bottle of Harpoon. Harpoon is OK, but their best? Yikes. No Imperial Stouts either. They had Weihestephaner listed as on tap, but were out, as well as another German Hefe they were out of. They did have Hogarten, Ayinger Hefe, Hobgoblin, Arrogant Bastard, and many other fine beers, just nothing that a hop head would crave. No Stone, Great Divide, Victory, Bear Republic, and other than the Witbier, no Belgians at all.
I suppose some things only change slowly. Here's to hoping that SC becomes a beer destination some day.

First and foremost, this bar is one of 50 participating in the JLS (John's locker stock) program, therefore offers beer, that I cannot aquire in my home therefore, moves the party to the bar, which is key.

Also the "tome" as it is called has well over 200 beers to choose from, from $1 pabst cans to small time lowcountry mico's. The downstairs is where it's namesake pizzaria is located, which servers very good pizza and even better soft pretzles to go along with the beer and the kitchen stays open as long as the bar does.

There is also a 100 beer club, which is further incentive to try different beers and micro's as well as make regulars. I feel as though this breeds an exceptional atmosphere. In conversation, I mentioned that I was in the Navy, and immediately the regular I was talking beer with, bought a round, and the bartender got the next one on the house. Can't beat that!

Stopped by last night to watch Ohio State get blown out of the water by Florida in the BCS Championship game. I left at half time but had a good time while at MM.

Same setup as most other ones: Booths and tables downstairs with the kitchen, bar and more booths and tables up stairs with the teles. I was upstairs. Lots of The Citadel cadets were there since school was back in session. I actually had the best service at this MM than I have had at any other. The bartender paid attention and refilled my water and beer glass whenever needed.

They had about 20 beers on draft and maybe 50 bottles. I had draft beers: $4 Rogue Santas Private Reserve, $3.50 Terrapin Rye, $4 Imperial pint of Guinness, $4 Highland St Terese, and finished the night off with some $1 PBR cans.

This is a nice MM with tons of stuff to do around town as well. SInce it is right in downtown, there are about four or five more decent bars within walking distance.

Monday night is Metal Monday Karaoke right next door. WOW!!

I stopped in here during a visit while on vacation. Overall, I would rate the service as being good. What was lacked in knowledge, was made up for in effort. Tons of beer to choose from here, from a large selection of Rogue to Samuel Smith, etc, etc. I made a couple of selections from the menu that they were out of, but the bartenders were able to make great recommenations that made my stop here enjoyable. Of course, a great laid-back atmosphere and a huge selection of beer. A great place to kick back and sample some beer.

Visiting from Canada, found this place using BA.
Even the non-beer enthusiasts in the group were impressed.

Great beer selection, in bottle and on tap. I had the Terrapin Rye Pale Ale, from Columbia SC, a very good brew, and a seasonal offering from Rogue. Prices quite reasonable.

Service was great, with a very pleasant and attentive young lady, who really knew her beer.
Great pizza, excellent crust-must be using beer to make it.

Located downtown on King, easy to miss, but watch for the mushrooms on the door handles.

I would highly recommend this place; for beer and for pizza lovers.

This is a nice southern hippie/yuppie pizza chain with some good draught and bottled beers to peddle. Atmosphere is nuevo hippie with nice sculptured letters, exposed warehouse style firehouse brick, etc, etc. Free local papers compliment the food and beer nicely. The pizza here is amazingly killer and pretty cheap. Try the fresh garlic, basil, tomato, and pesto combo...scrumptous. The beers are fresh and good as well, the draught selection was lacking but a few palmetoo bottles went with my beer just grand. A good place in Charleston (and all points deep south) check them out when you get a chance...

So, I had not been to Mellow Mushroom in a while, and this was the first time I actually sat in the bar Area. On Tap They had Charleston Brewing's Lagerhead lager and East Bay IPA. Rouge(Deadguy, and Kells Irish Lager), Hobgoblin, Newcastle, and about ten others. Bottled beer: I was really impressed. They had things I had never seen in the state: Cooper's Vintage and Dark Ale(they also stock the sparkling, extra stout, and the pale). Highland Brewing Kashmir IPA(as well as the other three varieties we see in this town), Rogue's red ale, among others. Also fully stocked with Rogue bottles, as well as Sam Smith, a nice selection of European beers in general, and just about all the micro and craft brews from the US that you can find in Charleston(one of the best selections in town).

Service was the best that I have had ever at Mellow Mushroom, which is not saying much. But the waiters/bartenders were nice and helpful....The service has improved alot.

Food: They have great food, highly recommended.
Its kinda pricey on beer and can rack up a bill real quickly

Great beer bar. Probably one of the best beer bars I've seen in South Carolina. I think I counted thirteen taps and the bartender said they keep around 140 unique bottled beers. Have a small fridge with seven to ten seasonals. Being that it was winter and South Carolina bars can't sell anything higher than six percent, the seasonals weren't the best ever but I'm sure it's better in other seasons. Great atmosphere with lots of college kids from nearby College of Charleston. They have a Brewland game and 100 Beer Club for people to frequent the bar and keep up with the different brews they've had there. Great place. Definitely worth visiting.

I followed some recommendations to visit the MM, and I can say both me and my wife are glad we went. The bar is upstairs while the kitchen is downstairs, so we trodded up to the bar. We were pleasantly surprised that no one was seated at the bar, as every table on both floors were filled with patrons eating pizzas and hoagies (it was lunch time). There are colorful "Mushroom people" 3D paintings on the walls for decoration, and a Brewland game board over the bar. I didn't ask what that was about.

There were 12 beers on tap, mostly micros which was a nice surprise. My wife enjoyed the Rogue offering while I had a SNPA (one of my favorites with pizza). There were also about 100 other beers offered in bottles. There was a 100 Beer Club plaque containing patrons who sample 100 beers and in how many days they did it (one was 17 days while others were 200 days). The pizzas we had were very good, and the other food people were eating also looked great.

Service was very good at the bar, spotty at the tables but the place was packed. The bartender was very knowledgeable of the beers. Definitely a young crowd hangout. This was a great stop as most establishments we visited throughout our 10 day South Carolina trip did not offer this huge selection of beer with the good food.
