My friend brought this back to Canada for me from a trip to her home city of Braunschweig in Germany. It is apparently a rare beer even in Germany that has a rich history that started out as a high alcohol black beer, then went to a zero alcohol very thick beverage that was used a lot in cooking and baking, and is now back to a 5.2% more traditional beer.
The beer pours with a thick head that stays around for a while then dissipates to a thin covering.
It has a dark amber or dark copper color.
Smell is a mix of sweet and sour.
Mouthfeel is silky smooth with just the perfect amount of carbonation. Carbonation bubbles seem very small and fine.
Taste is quite complex, on the sweet side of the spectrum are notes of caramel and butter, and on the sour side there are hints of herbs and spices, with a nice bitter end note. As I said, it is quite complex and very special.
I really enjoy this beer, and would buy it regularly if it were available here in Canada.
The rareity of this beer makes it even more special. Good luck finding it outside of Braunschweig.
