On a mission to eliminate food waste! Imperfect Foods, a sustainable online grocer dedicated to building a kinder, less wasteful food system, helped us create a citrusy beer made from34,560 oranges that may not be "perfect" by society's narrow beauty standards due to little scars and blemishes but are just as adorable and delicious.
We brewed Citrus Rescue alongside fellow B Corp, Imperfect Foods, with the goal of educating beer drinkers about the state of our broken food system, working to change the perception around the aesthetics of food, and encouraging more people to take steps to reduce food waste in their own lives – practices that can help alleviate hunger, slow climate change, and support farmers. Together, we've put together a few life hacks you can incorporate into your own daily routine to adopt food-rescue practices and make easy improvements in your own day-to-day footprint.
Founded in 2015, Imperfect Foods is the leading online grocer at the forefront of eliminating food waste and building a better food system. A Certified B Corporation (B Corp), Imperfect Foods works directly with farmers and producers to rescue, redistribute, and develop goods across multiple grocery categories, including its own private label offerings. To date, Imperfect Foods has rescued more than 150 million pounds of food from lesser outcomes. Customers enjoy a fully customizable service that is more affordable, and more environmentally friendly, than the average trip to the grocery store.

S: my first impression was intense pink grapefruit; after that it was orange peel;
T: follows the nose from start to finish; mild to moderate bitterness at the end;
M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;
O: very interesting;

I actually kind of liked it reminded me of Heavy Seas Tropicanon but with a lighter more session able ABV. You can tell its brewed with citrus peel chock full of orange undertones but as an IPA your not going to get a sweet juice its still going to be bitter an aggressive.
Overall for a buck I think it was worth it but I am not sure I would track it down for a six pack.

12 oz can, dated 6/26/22. Pours hazy yellow with a big rocky white head that retains well and leaves little lacing.
The aroma is wheat malts with some fruit.
The flavor is sweet earthy wheat malt with fruity hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, decent fruit malty IPA.

Pours a light yellow golden, slightly hazy, thick white head. Good head retention. Big citrus aroma. Taste is very heavy on the orange. Somewhat "juicy" but also a little pithy. A touch sweet but with short zesty finish with some bitterness. Thin to medium bodied.

Slightly hazy carbonated yellow color. Two fingers of white head sinking into the beer. Lacing is seen on the glass as the beer goes down.
Orange and more orange citrus like smells coming off the beer.
Lots of orange citrus on the taste. a bit of pith bitter orange as well. A hint of bitter at the back of the taste.
Mouth is prickly with carbonation. Fairly light mouth feel. A bit of slick finish with some lingering bitterness that hangs for a brief second.
A very orange beer for sure. They really nailed that. The orange comes in just a bit sweet but also contains some bitter from the pith also. At only 30 IBU's this is really a light hitting IPA. As a matter of a fact it really does not remind me much of an IPA. Kind of like a citrus pale ale. Interesting that I also detect some of the alcohol as it warms the back of the throat a bit. A fairly decent beer and definitely a citrus filled one. Cheers BA brothers and sisters!

Picked up a sixer this afternoon at Shoppers in Germantown. Pale yellow with a watery head and plenty of orange zest in the nose. The texture here holds up okay but not perfect. A stiffer texture would hep a lot here. Heavy citrus tones but not properly fruity like the nose. Still, refreshing and drinkable.

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is murky and very light straw, head is bright white and presents 1 finger thick, then dissipates to thin top with a thicker ring.
Smell is mixed orange juice and malt, has an orange julius type vibe, maybe lighter hop notes of herbs and grass.
Taste is similar with a smoothie like orange juice flavor, limited other hop notes but some herbal/floral notes, some what dryer and less juicy than anticipated.
Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, low/moderate bitterness with some drying beginning.
Overall a great concept beer that executes well - not overly juicy, smoother/smoothie feel and flavor, but more limited bitterness for an ipa. Base and speciality malts seem light to let the juice shine through and ends but being drier than many citrus added IPAs.

12oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $1.99. Best by date of 7/24/22. I will assume that this was canned approximately 6 months ago, so this is probably around 3 months old.
Look: Pours out a mildly hazy pale golden color with a big, fluffy white head. The head receded and there is a bit of lacing around the edge of the glass.
Smell: Lots of orange - juice and zest. Smells a bit like Flintstone's vitamins. Overall, it smells bright and inviting.
Taste: It's very drinkable. It's actually a bit watery, which is kind of disappointing. Up front, it's juicy and orangey. The beer is very light on the palate and I get sweet notes from the fruit that almost remind me of artificial sweetener. The finish is mildly bitter - it's pithy and rindy. It's a bit boring on the palate.
Feel: Appropriately carbonated and has a relatively light mouthfeel.
Overall: This is the second time I had this beer. When I had it previously, I recall that it was much better. I probably also consumed it when it was much fresher because it was likely soon after it was released. I love the concept to use "perfectly good but imperfect looking fruit" in the brewing process. I would like to try a fresher version of this beer again.
From the can:
India Pale Ale with orange juice, orange peel, and natural flavors
From the website:
To make Citrus Rescue IPA, we used approximately 35,000 imperfect oranges from Imperfect Foods’ supply chain of farmers looking to sell previously unwanted produce. The beer was dry hopped with Citra, Lotus and Mosaic hops to amplify those citrus flavors for a tangy, orange fruited like experience.
ABV: 6.5
IBU: 30
Calories: 180
Yeast: Ale
Hops: Chinook, Citra, Incognito, Galaxy, Nugget, Citra, Lotus, Mosaic
Malt: 2 Row Pale, Malted Oats, Pale Wheat

Pale gold, hazy, fluffy white head recedes slowly, some lacing; Pleasant tasting, mild; Smooth with just a little after-tang; I don't expect this to become a favorite, but it's not bad.
