pours pitch black with a sizable light mocha head that raises well above two fingers and sticks around a while. laces very well. lots of head for a barrel aged beer.
wow, theres some coffee in there. very dark roasted, but sweetened up by the lactose sugar of the milk stout. almost a french vanilla iced coffee aroma that is very enticing.
coffee not quite as dominant in the flavor, but its definitely there and adds a significant bitterness and deep roast on top of the already tasty base beer. not much wood from whatever barrels they used (couldn't track down any information other than the little white sticker attached to the neck of the bottle), except perhaps for the vanilla that adds to the coffee and lactose sugar. sweet, rich, roasty, bitter, delicious. only bad part is that there is a slight sour off note on the finish. I'm hoping its not a sign of an infection that is underlying in this brew and just my palate playing tricks on me. As it drinks right now it's delicious.
medium to full bodied with a bit too much carbonation for the style and flavor profile... would like it a bit creamier.
wow. easily the best beer I've ever had by Blue Hills. I bought two bottles. I'm going back to buy the rest tomorrow. very good coffee stout. Just don't expect a "bourbon barrel-aged" component to it. the coffee flavors they added though are magnificent and work perfectly with the base beer.
