September 8th, 2013 - An Oatmeal IPA? Science has bred something gnarly here, but I'm curious, and so here on a visit to the wonderfully abbreviated BLAH I order a pint to give the cat-dog beer a try. The aroma is definitely ore hoppy than it is malty, kind of like New Belgium's Ranger, with a resinous sweetness, and a bright, airy, mountain air freshness. The palate is buzzy, with a tamed hops touch. I also find a subtle taste of cantaloupe, or green melon, and probably both. I am surprised to find it here, but I like it. The tropical sugar is welcome here. I find much more evidence of the IPA than the oatmeal, but whatever ingredients went into this omni basket of goods, I like it.

Draft service into a becker glass at Tiger! Tiger! in San Diego.
A: Hazy, brassy golden color with one finger of diminishing white foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.
S: Soft wheaty grain is in unfortunate balance with weak hops that show some pine and tropical fruit.
T: Begins dry, with mixed citrus fruit and rustic toasted malt. Acidity is moderate into the middle where hop aromatics become more like the smell amidst the onset of further dryness and minerality. The finish shows astringent bitterness but declining aromatic flavors.
M: Medium viscosity, pithy and acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: While it appears to be assembled faithfully by the numbers, this IPA seems to struggle to unlock the full effect of its nelson sauvin hops. Despite the gimmicky inclusion of oatmeal in the malt bill, this beer isn't breaking down any barriers--but it works just fine.

Cask pour at Blind Lady.
A: Burnished golden yellow with good clarity. The head is two fingers of craggy sea foam. Great retention and lots of lacing.
S: Pine, tangerine, spicy grapefruit, and orange with a bit of guava, pineapple, and passion fruit. Super aromatic and bright. Lightly floral. Malt is crackery and faint.
T: Blend of grapefruit, orange, and tangerine flesh. Citrus forward with a smooth lower moderate bitterness. There's a touch of guava and passion fruit with light crackery malt. The midpalate has some pine that carries through the dry citrus flesh and rind finish.
M: Upper light body with upper low cask carbonation. The mouthfeel is light, smooth, dry, and sticky.
Overall: This is awesome. Really glad I made a point of stopping by to try this.
