Growler fill from the brewery. Dark opaque brown, small airy beige head. Big roast malt aroma with minor notes of chocolate. Taste is roast grain bitterness, hint of coffee and semi-sweet chocolate. Medium weight, slightly oily. Minor metallic tinge at the finish.

The beer pours a rich brown with a tan head. The aroma is of malt tinged with chocolate and coffee. The taste is a rich malt with hints of sugar and chocolate. The feel is medium and slightly wet. Just a good solid dobblebock that at slightly over 8% is dangerously drinkable.

Decimator Doppelbock. "Strong unfiltered black bock" was the befitting descriptor tagged beside the name of this beer on the menu board introducing this unique and luscious beer. Quite different in its unfiltered capacity, yet otherwise fits well within style. My notes provided another tagline: “dense & intense.” Dense color with intense ability to excite.

Specifics: This offering was 8.5% ABV with a pretty nice long lagering time. Was brewed 7/5/05 and released/tapped on 11/2. I sampled on 1/3/06 from draft at the taproom.

Appearance – nearly the hue of stout-like darkness but a deep, deep unfiltered brown rather than absolutely black. Pretty good amount of head also, considering its strength.

Aroma – malty sweet with some grain nose (roasted malt).

Mouthfeel – neither too thin nor thick, personally; on the heavier side for style (being unfiltered) yet highly drinkable(!).

Taste – a regarded achievement, IMO. Malt and alcohol shine in the background with full flavor throughout. Sweetness, hop bitterness and hints or roasted malt play well together with no one overtly beating the others out of contention. This beer offered just perceptible hints of dried prunes as a finishing taste. Any urge to ‘Americanize’ with hop-utilization is ‘welcomely’ missing (here, for a change). In line with the best of these strong lagers.
