Tasted by a half-pint and served on gravity at the "Town Mill", a Wadworth's pub situated in a real (roughly) four-hundred-year-old town-mill (water mill) in the centre of Andover. The cask was one of around 16 served during the pub's mini-beerfestival in late summer 2008. The pump-clip displayed on the cask has some "subtitles" to the beer's name, namely: "(My) Forest Gold (Hand Off!)"... rather silly, innit?
A: mildly hazy, dark tawny in colour, with static carbonation.
S: phenolic smokiness comes pronounced, plus a little fig-jam like sweetness likely from the malts and a little longan-fruit's aroma. Very subdued and not extremely fresh, alas.
T: the foretaste is mildly salty sweet with plenty of phenolic smokiness (signs of infection?), longan fruits, and a lingering floral aftertaste of hops (like Osmanthus fragrans). A sharp tinge of sour malts also lingers in the end. Rather different.
M&D: too flat on the palate, likely due to the freshness issue, but overall the beer comes with some body and an intriguing flavour profile. The Red Shoot Inn (the brewpub that makes this beer) is situated in the heart of New Forest, not far from where I live so I might as well pay it a visit and try the beers fresh on cask!
