This award winning A.P.A is brewed with malted rye, hopped with Amarillo and Cascade, and then aged in local Templeton Rye barrels. This ale is a spicy and citrusy treat, with hints of whiskey and oak. Originally brewed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition.

Pours a cloudy, copper color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong fresh whiskey, citrus hops, sweet malt, floral notes, and a hint of yeast. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a dryness from the liquor. Tastes of sweet malt, whiskey, citrus hops, floral hops, and a hint of yeast. Overall, good appearance, strong whiskey in the aroma, but the blend of the body is much better.

Reviewed from notes on my Iowa trip
Pours murky brown with a finger or so of creamy foam. Nice lacing and decent retention, but very ugly looking.
Nice light whiskey aroma with heavy vanilla and a bit of toffee. Don't really get much hoppiness out of the nose.
Flavor is a nice balance of everything promised. I get some more floral/citrusy hop notes than I did in the aroma with a ton of oak and just a bit of booze. Spiciness of the whiskey plays well with the hops and every individual component is kept in moderation making it very complex.
Pretty smooth mouthfeel. No idea the ABV, but little alcohol present. I'd estimate maybe 7-8 per the style. Lighter carbonation fits well with the barreling.
Very impressed by this beer. Comparing directly to Naughty Temple which I had the day before, it doesn't hold up, but compared to every other barrel aged pale I've had, this does stand out. There is enough of a malt backbone that the barrel doesn't overwhelm and the flavors meld together very nice.

After tastes of several other CABC beers, I chose the biggest and most interesting for my one 'full pour' beer on my recent visit. Actually 'biggest' is a guess, as I could never find an ABV listed and nobody seemed to know... 7-8% range, maybe??? Poured to a teardrop goblet.
An American Pale Ale with malted rye, Amarillo and Cascade hops, aged in Templeton rye whiskey barrels.
A: Presented with a 1/2 finger of creamy whitish head, one which holds nicely in fading, droopy rings and scattered freckles. Lighting isn't great in the bar, but held (geekily) to a stronger light, it's a chestnut/amber with a mild haziness. Looking straight down, there's a concentric skim that looks eerily like an eyeball staring, unblinking, back at me.
S: Mmmmm... nice nose - a boozy 'whiskey' scent with vanilla, spice and toffee. Good strength, hard to discern much about the beer behind the barrel, but I'm OK with that...
T: Love what an oaky whiskey will do to transform this well-hopped pale. Cascade and Amarillo are two of my favorite hops, with big sappy 'pine' and sweet/tart 'citrus' flavors when used properly. This does all of the above well: spicing is just right, hops pop with resinous juiciness, bitterness lingers but not oppressive, woodiness adds an earthy dustiness in the finish. Really excellent.
M: Smooth, creamy feel upfront with a niggling spiciness in the end. Body is a bit heavier than 'medium' - not syrupy or sticky, but a little thicker on the tongue. Mild warming belies some alcoholic strength, but -again- no one could quote the ABV, so I'm left to wonder. Lasting 'barrel' finish - a borbon/whiskey-lover's delight!
O: Terrific beer! I was generally satisfied with all the beers I tried at CABC, but this one won hands down. Excellent flavor and aroma, beautiful feel - one I'd gladly order again...and again.

Color is typical for a British pale ale. You don't get the rye until you taste it.

Taste: I taste vanilla like a mouth-bomb. In a great, smooth, rye-y way. Great smooth hop finish as well
Mouthfeel: supersmooth
Overall: I love it. It is priced as one of their premium beers, so refilling a growler was $19, but I think well worth it. I asked the brewer the ABV, he thought 6.7 or 6.8.
Tip for the brewery: checkin on Yelp -- the reward is a personal brewery tour. I don't know if that happens at night, but at lunchtime today I got to see the brewery area, meet the brewer, see the grain storage and the cold storage in the basement, and lots of Templeton Rye barrels. I thought it was very cool.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, lightly carbonated. Dry at the end.
This was a wonderful find here in the mid-west. Although it is probably more accurately classified as a rye beer with the addition of rye malt.
If you happen to stop by the brewery, the 21st amendment has a big brother, a rye barley wine. It's like the 21st amendment only more so.
