I tried this on tap at Fat Heads brewpub in North Olmsted. The notes on the menu stated that this was brewed with Belgian dark chocolate and local pumpkins with pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, ginger). The pour is dark and nearly opaque with a tan foam (about as expected for a chocolate stout). The aroma is really unique to me, I had no idea it could smell this good. Literally it was like pumpkin pie with chocolate, or maybe the other way around. Cinnamon and chocolate dominate the taste too, and here the effect gets old kind of quickly. If I enjoyed pumpkin beers more than I do, this could be nirvana. But I don't, so this was a nice diversion at most. The body is thick enough to match these flavors, overall a great idea and great brewing achievement.

I am hoping I simply had a pint from a bad batch.
Served on tap in the brew pub, looked great, was excited to try. It's smell was nice, roasted malt, good chocolate undertones. But the bottom line is, the taste was burnt. I think the malt was roasted too long, and it was burnt, and it took my palate over, left that taste on the back of the tongue and lingered long into the next beer.

On tap- > 12 oz glass
2010
Arrives pitch black with a small head that quickly settles to soap aids. Sheets of lace deposit dotted lace up and down the glass.
Nose: chocolate pumpkin deep down in there
Creamy and chewy, with a dry milk stout feel. Dark burnt chocolate and some nutty notes. Spices and pumpkin are subdued and far in the bacground. Which for me is a huge plus as I don.t like in your face spice or pumpkin in my beers. As the beer warms more pumpkin pie elements emerge and the spiced toned bitterness lingers more and more.
Imagine that a fall beer actually released in the heart of the fall season. My 1ST in the bar review but what else to do at 11am.

A-deep jet black that allows no light to exit, khaki colored head that s thin and leaves very little lace
S-light notes of bitter chocolate and a hint of spicy pepper
T/M-smooth and slightly creamy with a taste of bitter sweet chocolate, some cinnamon and nutmeg, finishing with a little bite from the carbonation
D-very smooth and pretty tasty, a mix of a stout and a christmas ale, not really any pumpkin, the carbonation takes away from the drinkability

Review from notes. Poured into a clean, clear glass last night at the brewery in North Olmsted. Notes from the bar: A luxurious chocolate stout brewed with 70% cacao Belgian dark chocolate, 100 pounds of locally grown, roasted pumpkins, and milk sugar. Hints of roasted coffee and licorice are accented by subtle undertones of cinnamon and ginger spice. The warm gentle spices make this a perfect beer for the late autumn season.
A Dark, dark body with a nice medium brown, thick head. Nice lacing left on the glass afterwards as well. 4.0
S Dark roast malt and chocolate only after repeated sniffs (this is not a super aromatic beer!) 3.5
T Nice dark roast malt, chocolate tastes but I really do not taste the pumpkin or the spices mentioned in the description. I had a buddy taste it too. He did report that he tasted some pumpkin but admitted that it is buried under the other, more predominant tastes. I am taking off some credit from the taste for the very minimal pumpkin taste. 3.5
M Big, thick, sticky like it should be. 3.5
D Quite good as the dark roast malt and chocolate play well together, make a nice, inviting, interesting beer at a very reasonable ABV level. 4.0
Notes: Gotta love the Fat Head's folks for trying new things but if you love pumpkin beers I am not sure that you will be satisfied with this one. Despite that slight dissapointment it remains a good beer.
