Described as a scotch based ale brewed with belgian yeast and aged in rye barrels.
A dark brown with some red highlights with a thin brown head that disappears rapidly. Aromas of mostly rye and some floral and malt. Rye is immediately upfront but gives way quickly to floral, chocolate and very light yeast. The flavors balance the rye quite well to the point that you forget about until you swallow and the rye whiskey flavor comes back to you. The carbonation is really about where an ale should be and there is just a bit of chewiness. Overall, balanced and interesting.
The interplay of flavors is quite good in this. To be honest, I would really like to see the darker malts removed and the carbonation reduced a bit but I suppose at that point it might as well be a whiskey. Nonetheless, a very enjoyable beer that I had a hard time moving on from. Have their Scotch Ale first and then try this one.
