A Foggy Day was brewed with Jon and Parker Hall for the annual Willamette Week Pro/Am event. We ran their classic Bavarian-style weisse beer recipe through our system. That included a grist entirely composed of Mecca Grade Malt from central Oregon, anchoring the flavor profile with distinct local character around the open fermented weisse yeast notes - clove, white pepper, banana, bubble gum, and rose.

Growler from the brewery.
A clear light orange with a thin, off-white head with decent retention and mild lacing, this looks solid. The nose has a great wheat note, really bringing to mind Heater Allen's Helles with OR malt - grainy, doughy, floral, with a mild dusty note. When i go back to my review of that beer, i see that i noted that it'd be better suited to a beer that could invoke the terroir a little more, and the choice of hefeweizen is inspired. A combination of floral rose and jasmine notes (from open fermentation?), mild banana and clove (from the hefeweizen yeast) and touches of white pepper and bubblegum make for a very enjoyable beer. The palate opens with a focus on the floral and bubblegum notes, along with a blend of honey, banana and clove. The mid-palate focuses on the spice and floral notes, making this seem more like a warm-fermented saison-hefeweizen hybrid than the description alludes to. Drying, clean on the palate , this beer has a lingering blend of clove and fruit. Quite excellent.
